I have read many places that the small a7r form factor lulls one into thinking you can hand hold and shoot away. Not true. That camera is much more of a tripod camera than we realize I am afraid. Your shutter speeds hand held should be 10x the FL minimum in my mind and that might not be enough. Just my first thoughts upon reading your shooting methods with your new a7r. Do you know anyone with a Techart adapter for Contax G AF lenses? If so, try their 45/2.0 if available.

Lou,

We will have to check, but I think that what has been suggested for a 35mm- 50mm lens of about 1/250 of a second may just about do it for a very high percentage of shots. You have to use good form, take photos between breaths, between heart beats, squeeze (not jerk the shutter), give good support to the camera and lens, etc. For me, I probably use a tripod for 90%+ of my images so, I am accustomed to this.

I've been briefly trying the M28 Elmarit ASPH and the edges are looking quite good. I'm probably just easily pleased and it will take me a while to try all the lenses I have here and find out what works.

The 75 Summarit looks good and is easy to focus. Still not what I would call the Leica look, plenty of menu options to fiddle with though!

Very happy that you received your A7r. I live in London and placed my order when the camera was announced and still have no confirmed date for when i can expect it. Cant wait to receive mine and test it out with my Leica glass.

Did you place the order with Sony Europe? I put mine in the day after release and the estimate was for the 4th/5th November, so they were 11 days late!

I will practice a little more tomorrow bearing in mind shutter speeds and see what happens.

I would expect to get some decent results handheld, I'll have a better go at it tomorrow. I don't know anyone with any Contax G lenses.

Just managed a side by side comparison in lightroom of a 90/4 macro elmar shot. 30 second exposures, forgot to match the iso exactly but it's base on each camera. (100/160)

It's dark outside and these shots are really only for my own decision making process, so please try to keep the criticism to a minimum. It is what it is. I'm coming to my own conclusions having seen the comparison.

I've uploaded them as jpegs and a few other A7r pics to my Flikr account. I don't use it much so I've no idea whether it's private etc. but my user name on flikr is Mr Andy Jones.

The link is Flickr: Mr Andy Jones' Photostream

Still no idea where to upload raw files but maybe someone would like to let me know the best option.

Thank you for sharing.

For RAW files, you can use WeTransfer (up to 2gb free per upload). There is no sign up required. You enter a destination email (called friends email), you enter your email, select the files you wanna send and click upload. Once uploaded, you'll get a link for the location of the files. If you post that link here, anyone can click it to download the images.

I think the destination and source email can be the same.

The cable release is called the Sony RM-VPR1 and is available now. It works with several new still and video cameras and can fit into the USB port or the multiport. Some cameras, such as the N3 with 16-50 power zoom can also be zoomed via the remote.

I read from page 43 of A7/A7r instruction manual, in the middle of the rows a "Remote Ctrl" is there with description as: " Set whether to use infrared remote control (On/Off)".

I'm not sure whether it has something to do with the RM-VPR1 you mentioned.

I dont know why, it just seemed liked a good idea at the time, as none of the camera outlets i normally deal with, stock Sony, i placed my order with WEX :o

Thanks for sharing your initial experiences with the A7r, i look forward to reading more :)

I do not have a large leica lense collection, 2x28mm 2x50mm 75mm but happy to meet up if you wanted to try any of these out. PM me if interested.

My experience from the D800E was that I had to use 1 / (3xfocal length) as maximum shutter time when working handheld to get images sharp enough on pixel level. The camera had also an automatic option to set this ratio combined with the auto ISO setting but this requires that the lenses can be detected by the camera.

But as this is also only a rule of thumb, it may depend on personal characteristics. If there is an issue with vibration coming from the shutter, I am sure, people will find out soon and typically this interferes only with a particular shutter speed.

Based on my results this morning that rule works for me. 1/160 with a 40/2 and the results are very good.

I will try to get some raw side bit side with the M9 done today.

I can't see much difference in these centre crops, 1 at 1/250 another at 1/160. iso 500 / 200. Using Leica 40/2 at 5.6. The bottom right corner crop shows issues that I'm seeing a lot, until I look at this on the M9 I'm not sure if it's the lens or the sensor.

Side by side M9 A7r. Handheld ISO160 1/100 28/2.8@5.6 Auto Iso

The results speak for themselves. I can change white balance and file size but it's not going to change the basic facts.

I've included centre crops and upper right corner crops. If I get a chance to upload some RAW files to retransfer I'll post a link.

Mr.Jones (Andy),

Thanks for running the tests. As to the Leica C 40mm f2 Summicron, over at Fredmiranda.com we already knew that the lens performed well on the A7r until we reached the extreme corners. But that is also the way that this lens performs on film as well.

For many of us this is and will be an acceptable performance using the A7r and if we find it objectionable in some instances we will just crop the extreme corners. For myself I intend to use my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor (latest incarnation of the C 40mm Summicron) as a main lens for my A7r.

For your comparison between the M9 and the A7r with the M 28mm f2.8 Elmarit ASPH which is which in the order of the images? If I am understanding this correctly then you have an error in order for those in the center of the image based upon the color. The second image in the last comparison based upon color appears to come from the first FF image and the first image in the last comparison based upon color appears to come from the second FF image.

Also, your upper left crop (they are not I believe from the upper right as you indicate) for the first of the pair of images appears to come from the second FF image and the second of the pair of images appears to come from the first FF image.

I think you mean the order is M9 - A7 - A7 - M9 - A7 - M9.

Very little in it on the centre crop, I think I might just trade in my M8 for an M9 and forget about these new cameras. The corner could be improved running through cornerfix et al but you can see its a bit smeared under that.

I can't see why the two methods of remotes would be linked. I think the reason to turn off the IR remote function is to keep someone else from triggering your camera, or if you have more than one camera set up.

So we've come the full circle for Leica WA lenses with the A7R ?

This thread reminds me a bit of an old saying in medicine - that you have to rush out and use the new drug before it doesn't work anymore....

Actually, in this case, you have to rush out and use the old drug before the old patient expires :)

In any case, I am not selling my old glass. I believe that new improved sensors more tolerant to ray angle will come in the future.
