Starting with the RX1. At first people thought Sony had lost their mind releasing a $3,000 FF PAS. Then it became recognized that the camera was one of the best 24MP sensors on the market. The Zeiss lens could quite possibly rival the Leica 35mm FLE. Together this compact little jewel was producing some of the best 35mm files on the market. Sony was capable of producing one of the nicest cameras on the market. And, not just good, but maybe a better optic, sensor, and small body than Leica and the rest. In one single release of a niche camera Sony had proven themselves as a competitor in a sort of high-end market of cameras with the highest optical and camera body/sensors. Sure, the NEX series pushed in this direction and the Alpha helped too. But, Sony really had one main problem... they didn't have the lenses. Now, it is clear that Zeiss is going to shore that up for Sony. On the heals of the RX1 now comes the A7 series. I don't know about you, but I am sure taking the A7 seriously after owning the RX1. The RX1 sure put the new A7 series in a different light, for me. It sure is interesting to see how this is all going to turn out for a guy with a bunch of M lenses and a wonky, but much loved M240. Not only that, but and though many may not like or may argue with me. As Leica users we are going full circle in the sense of the early Leica R SLR film camera bodies and their counterparts from Minolta. The same chassis that was used for the Minolta X-E7 was used for the Leica R3 and R3MOT. The same chassis that was used by the Minolta XD11 was used by the Leica R4, R4S, R4SP, RE, R5, R6, R6.2, and R7. So now that Minolta was sold to Sony it is not out of place for us, particularly Leica R users mounring our R and even our M series lenses on the new Sony A7 and A7r. In addition, Leica had the agreement with Minolta for years that resulted in the Leitz and Leitz/Minolta CL as well as a sharing of lenses and lens designs between the 2 makers. So it comes down to personal tolerance for these types of things; your personal threshold for acceptable focus confirmation maybe different from the reviewers, etc. Indeed. And teven if the rangefinder is "calibrated", it is not much use with a stopped down Noctilux f/1. I would like to see a 3D focus peaking feature, coloring pixels as follow: - white if they are in focus - blue if they are behind focus (increase transparency with out-of-focus distance) - red if they are in front of focus (increase transparency with out-of-focus distance) This should be possible with technologies like DPAF. Add to that live, real time clipping + & - indication (different colours again, of course) and we're almost there. I would have all those on a shortcut near the shutter release, which would toggle them on and off with each press. Oh, and I want to be able to upload multiple custom overlay 'grids', and have them selectable easily. The out of crop areas should be low lit when say shooting square grid on the 2:3 sensor. In any case, if the rumors are correct, some of our members and others on other fora may receive their cameras in Asia and Europe in only 9 to 12 or so days. It may be longer than that, but hopefully someone will be getting them in less than 2 weeks or so. I know that there are a lot of anxious people waiting for their cameras (I know that I am waiting for my A7r and I really want it soon; I have been waiting for years for an acceptable R Solution) and also waited with baited breath regarding which WA RF lenses will work well with the A7 and the A7r. Rich Thanks Rich. Well, I now have both my Metabones adapters. The R and M both to E Mount. As you say the only missing item is the a7r. Come on December! I assumed that if you used an M to E adapter, you would end up with a cropped image as the E adapter is for the NEX line which are not full frame. No. You just need an adapter with the largest apertures so as to not cause a crop. Some of the adapters designed for instance for the Canon lenses are cropped due to contacts but the newest Metabones adapter will work in that instance for the FF cameras. In the future and when the Phigment Leica M to NEX adapter is in stock that particular adapter will allow communication between the M lenses and the camera. We say in German: "Vorfreude ist die schönste Freude" (=anticipation is the biggest joy). Then the next new thing will be talked about, before it becomes reality... Btw: two of the three dealers, who sell Leica in Frankfurt have each a chrome M and a Noctilux in their window and the third dealer stocks them, too.
