Algrove I have the same type of thing on my D3s and love it..............Do you know if it will work with the Leica 1.4 magnifier attached as well.............many folks have said that the 1.4 works great with the Noctilux.

I already have the Olympus EVF (havent tried it yet as I am on the rig) but my gut feeling is is that I will get pissed off with the EVF and just use the Rangefinder

I sold my magnifiers since switching to the Dale photo method which works well for me. The eye cup was the best for me. Since it threads into the RF viewfinder I do not see why the combination of the two would not work. Somehow I remember that you can obtain those eye cups with correction too. Maybe someone else here can shed some light on that subject.

Understand your EVF possible impatience, but give it a chance as it be the answer to just about all your needs. I was surprised to see Overgaard using the EVF continuously with M and Noctilux during one of his workshops. Send him a question about his experiences or perhaps he has some comment on his website.

Do you currently wear glasses when shooting? I do not remember reading if you do or do not.

So would you reccomend the 1.35 over the 1.15 if am shooting my M with the Noctilux??

Not keen on the 1.15x. Optically inferior and eye placement seems more critical. It's a different design and more fiddly to adjust as well. The current 1.35x is by far the best of the bunch.

Hi Algrove

No glasses for shooting but glasses for reading.............after reading what thighslapper and Fang wrote I think I will just order the 1.35 with the 42 cup and give that a go.............do you know if the 50mm frame lines will still be visable

35 and up are visible. 28 if you peek round the corners (but unusable from a practical point of view...)

Thanks for all the feedback guys..................I just ordered the MS-MAG x1.35 magnifier for Leica M

I will give you some feedback once I try it out in ~ 3 weeks time

Sorry but I've come a little late for this.

But, I too have the one you've just ordered, two actually - for my M7 and M9.

They work very well for me and irrespective of lens, I just keep them on.

The weakness is that once you've set the correct diopter, because you cannot lock it, it swivels very easily.

As someone earlier said, I also worked out that putting in a washer works very well.

Would you care to elaborate what type of washer & how you attach it to the magnifier, reason i ask is I associate washer with solid metal/non-metal ring with hole in the middle you put between nut & bolt (there is split variety as well).

Looking at the item on the website perhaps putting suitably sized rubber "O" ring to sit on top and between magnifier eyepiece and diopter adjustment wheel would lock it.

Sorry, I was rather brief earlier as I had a lot on.

The washer is a rubber one which come in all sorts of sizes - I should have said rubber "O" ring, you are absolutely correct.

I bought a pack from a diy shop and picked the one which best fitted the item.

The whole unit will unscrew and the "O" ring will fit the diopter adjustment bit - just push it in. You than put the two together put the whole unit on the camera and then rotate the diopter bit until everything is correct for you. The diopter should now not move - it hasn't for me.

As and when your eyesight gets weaker, just keep turning the top bit.

Again, I apologise and hope that it is now clearer.

I have also read it's not the same when the diopter is calibrated to the target at 2m and 20m for example, and if I remember well one should adjust it for a distance in between. I believe 5m or so...
I am going with Jaap's reccomendation 2 meters............... and go with that:D

The only time you have to adjust the focus on the variable mags is for 2m or so or less...... and that figure varies with your age .... 50+ and you gradually lose more and more leeway due to stiffening of the lens in the eye and refractive changes.... for me there is a quarter turn between infinity and 1m.... but I'm getting on a bit .....:o

Anyway as it's variable you can pick your spot depending on your main usage ...... I just prefer it to be perfect at infinity as I don't take much up close....

Anyone tried one of these..................I am thinking of getting one for my new M to use with the Noctilux..................any feedback would be much appreciated

japan exposures | films and more (formerly Megaperls Japan Webshop)

It solved my focusing problem. I shoot a lot of portraits so need to focus on subjects eye. This and the 1.35 for a 90mm lens work great for me.
