TonyField Posted September 28, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am trying to come up with an explanation for the banding in the attached image. This happens on occasional shots on two different M9 cameras. In both cases, I am using a Lexar Platinum II card. I am curious if this is a sensor fault or the problem comes from somewhere else. This image is shot at F1.0 ISO 640, 1/125 sec and pushed 3.4 stops in ACR. Welcome, dear visitor! 250swb Posted September 28, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2013 Are the other occasions when it happens also when you push the exposure 3.4 stops in ACR, and does the band appear in the basic exposure without any ACR adjustments? The way the band fades out over 'better' exposed areas, like the hands, makes me think you are using the exposure slider in ACR just a bit too much and this is extreme under exposure banding being amplified. jaapv Posted September 28, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2013 If this were on just one camera I would say it is a sensor fault, but as it happens on two it would be too much of a coincidence; the only straw I can grasp at is a faulty card reader. Could you try uploading it again, preferably directly from the camera?
k-hawinkler Posted September 28, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 28, 2013 I would send a few affected images to Leica Solms and get their opinion in a follow up phone call. Although you pushed quite a bit this seems to go beyond normal banding IMHO. It also would be interesting if the problem persists with different memory cards or raw developer. brill64 Posted September 28, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2013 Put all your files where it occurs together to look at. It may be a bright light source from just outside of the frame? This may explain it being random in it's occurrence. Was a common cause of very similar banding from M8 files but much improved with the M9, although that was a green stripe. jaapv Posted September 28, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2013 That would stop at the midline of the sensor.
TonyField Posted September 29, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted September 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the comments..... I have gone through other images. The surprising thing I found is that the "streaking/banding" is located at different y-coordinates (in landscape display) and on a few random images. To me, this implies it is not a sensor issue in that a sensor problem would be strongly located at one pixel y-coordinate and be consistent from image to image. In addition, it is not dependent on the degree of push-processing. I think I will send a note to Germany and ask for an interpretation.

TonyField Posted September 29, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted September 29, 2013 Thanks Karl. Interesting read about the cards - and I cannot discount this as a potential source of the problem. The cards I am using are Sandisk and Lexar. The erratic pixel streak problem happens on both.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted September 30, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 30, 2013 Most likely, this is the card. The M9 bands with some cards. I recently had to stop using a brand new 32GB Lexar card and return to using a 16GB Lexar card due to banding. It's also more likely to occur when shooting a sequence of images rather than single considered shots. The card isn't faulty. It'll be fine in other cameras. It just doesn't play nice with your M9. Gordon Or is it the other way around? Like: Your M9 doesn't play nice with that memory card. As the card is presumably working fine in other cameras. FlashGordonPhotography Posted October 1, 2013 Share #12 Posted October 1, 2013 technically, I think you are correct. Gordon
brill64 Posted October 3, 2013 Share #13 Posted October 3, 2013 That would stop at the midline of the sensor. Ahh..yes. Thanks Jaapv. I remember now. Any solution to this yet? Have you sent the camera in to be checked?
