ehall@ehallphoto.com Posted September 22, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I managed to crack the LCD screen on my M9. It is the only one I have ever owned and I am traveling in the boonies with no others to which I can compare. Mine appears to have a hard plastic cover. I emailed a friend who has the same camera and he said that his was glass. There are no after market markings on my cracked plastic. Is this part of the camera? Is it an after market cover that I can remove and replace with something like a Giottos?

250swb Posted September 22, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2013 If it is ordinary M9 it is plastic, your friends camera may be an M9-P, in which case it is glass. If you haven't added anything like a screen protector to the camera yourself since the camera was new then yes, you have cracked the plastic, but that will have taken some hit to do it. If it works keep using it, perhaps cover it with a cheap iPhone screen protector cut down to hold it all together until you can send it in to Leica for repair. It seems that there is some space below my plastic and that is is possibly glass below it? It functions fine though it sounds as if it is not something I can repair myself? tobey bilek Posted September 23, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 23, 2013 I believe the screen is integral to the whole back half of the camera. Do not quote me on this. When it goes in, ask for the sapphire glass or cove the plastic with a Gillotos glass.

If you have had the camera from new and never put a glass screen protector on you have damaged the plastic screen and it needs to go to Leica for repair. If your camera is second hand somebody previously may have put a glass screen protector on, in which case you may simply have broken that, and it can be removed. viramati Posted September 23, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) the original screen is part of the whole back of the camera and would need to be replaced by Leica. If the camera works fine and you are happy to live with the crack a cheaper option would be just to get something like the Giottos and cover it with that

jdlaing Posted September 23, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 23, 2013 Here is a photo of it taken with the with my long lens. Yes sir it has taken a good hit. The damaged part is an acrylic cover screen over the LCD. If the LCD works fine it is a useable camera. You can then take your time to decide if you want to send it in for repairs. The reason I asked for the photo is to see if it had a protector screen applied by the original owner.

Seems a bit expensive for a temporary repair. Is there anywhere in the US I can send my M9 it to repair this or does it have to go to Germany? Thanks so much to all of you for your help! The Giottos glass protector should work fine in the interim. I don't know if Leica USA in New Jersey does those repairs but you could call and ask Carmen Vargas if they do. Best of luck. ramosa Posted September 23, 2013 Share #13 Posted September 23, 2013 Not that this helps now, but I have always had screen protectors on the LCDs of my M8 and now M9.
ehall@ehallphoto.com Posted September 24, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted September 24, 2013 I bought it used. Having nothing to compare it to, I thought that the plastic WAS an aftermarket protector.

Send it in to Leica NJ, they can absolutely repair this for you, it will cost some and they can also upgrade to sapphire if you wish. As mentioned above, call Leica NJ, talk to Carmen Vargas directly, she's great.
