Andi_77 Posted September 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday I collected from the store the M9 I had "reserved". It is really in excellent shape, it doesn't look like a camera with 15-20k shutter activations, and I'm in the super-excitement phase I did read carefully the instruction manual, and I also did a search here, but there are two things I'm not sure I understand. 1) Is there a way to set the "lag" between the shutter release and the shutter re-cocking or is it necessarily after the finger moves away from the button? 2) This one is a bit more complex to explain. The Bessa R2A I currently use has a simple lever to select the viewfinder framelines. I honestly thought the R9 would automatically select them based on your (manual or automatic) lens selection, but I guess I'm wrong. No big deal, I have to get used to way you should do this. The point is I'm not sure I understand how I have to do this. I was trying to understand the preview lever (never tried one), and - correct me if I'm wrong - it looks like moving it inwards or outwards will make the framelines "lock" based on the lens you selected. Is this correct? Thanks A LOT A.
Advertisement Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Hi Andi_77, Take a look here 2 "newbie" questions about the M9.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2013 If you set the shutter to "discrete" in the menu it will only release when you lift your finger from the shutter button. The. frame lines are selected automatically in pairs depending on the lens mounted. The preview lever is just that; a way to judge the framing so that you can mount the lens of your choice. Have a look at the FAQ at the top of this zu forum, there is plenty in there to interest a new owner.

I did take a look at the FAQs but honestly didn't find the answers, I apologize (perhaps I didn't look carefully enough). What worries me is this part: "the frame lines are selected automatically in pairs depending on the lens mounted"... I'll try again tonight, but I didn't notice any change in the frame lines after the lens selection in the menu
jaapv Posted September 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 18, 2013 Not in the menu; the frame lines are selected mechanically by a lug on the lens.
Andi_77 Posted September 18, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted September 18, 2013 Oh! OK... And - again, I apologize for the stupid questions and I thank you for your patience - everything should work also with a Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZM and with a Canon 50mm f/1,4 (with a screw -> M adapter)? Now I don't remember precisely, but I'm pretty sure that one of those lenses didn't work in terms of frame lines. Perhaps I know the reply: I should check whether my adapter for the Canon is the "right" one.... Am I guessing right? Thanks again!
pico Posted September 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 18, 2013 I honestly thought the R9 would automatically select them based on your (manual or automatic) lens selection, I presume you mean M9. The frame lines will come up automatically IF you have the correct screw-mount lens adapter. A proper adapter will be marked with the focal lengths (two) intended. This will bring up the combined 50/75 framelines. Steve
Andi_77 Posted September 18, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted September 18, 2013 Thanks a lot! Yes, I did mean M9 (the "recent-purchase-euphoria" side effects ). Tonight I'll check again, I guess the previous owner of the Canon sent me a wrong adapter... and I also guess I'll have to spend some Euros on a correct adapter. Regarding the shutter recocking: I've just read some interesting things about firmware version 1.196 (my M9 has that version), and now I know why yesterday I've noticed that sometimes the recocking was not immediate. I guess I'll keep that version anyway, for the moment I'm not really sure I get the "value" of the discrete mode. If I change my mind, I will revert to the previous firmware... Thanks again, A. CaptZoom Posted September 18, 2013 Share #9 Posted September 18, 2013 Audi Framelines -There are three pairs of frame lines on the camera: 35mm&135mm 28mm&90mm 50mm&75mm. -The frame lines are brought up when there is a lens attached. -The frame lines brought up are dictated by the lens attached to the camera. They are independent of the frame line preview lever or menu selection. -If you use a native M mount lens (Leica, Ziess ZM, and some Voigtlander lenses), the correct set of frame lines will be displayed. -If you are using a lens adapter to mount the lens, than the lens adapter will dictate which frame lines are selected. For your Canon 50mm lens, you wanna make sure you are using an adapter that will bring up the pair of frame lines that include the 50mm. -It is possible to attach Leica Thread Mount (LTM) lenses to any of the three available LTM to M mount adapters. You can attach a 50mm lens to an adapter that's set to bring up 35&135mm or 28&90mm or 50&75mm frame lines. The lens and camera will work properly, except that the wrong frame lines will be displayed. -Selecting a lens via the menu has to do with in camera processing/corrections. It has nothing to do with frame lines. Like Jaapv said, read the stickies. Or retread them. There's a lot of info to absorb, and it's easy to miss or forget things. The camera is pretty straight forward. Using it and getting familiar will also help you. Enjoy your new camera and lenses, and welcome to Leicaland:)

I'll buy the right adapter. -Selecting a lens via the menu has to do with in camera processing/corrections. I'll do some testing Like Jaapv said, read the stickies. Or retread them. There's a lot of info to absorb, and it's easy to miss or forget things. The camera is pretty straight forward. CaptZoom Posted September 18, 2013 Share #11 Posted September 18, 2013 Thank you very much I think that's exactly what happened... I'll buy the right adapter. The great part is the lenses will function properly, but composing will be challenging that is until you receive the new adapter. I'm actually curious to know the difference between the in-camera processing and the one in Lightroom 5 (when the lens profile is available, obviously). I'll do some testing Search for info on "color shift", "Italian flag", "lens correction" for more info. All the corrections can be done in PP (some with LR, others with different software like CornerFix amongst other options), but they are time consuming. I swear I did! And I also tried the search function... I don't know how I managed not to find this... No worries...there's tons of info to absorb. It takes time. Thanks a lot! Yesterday night I was feeling like a kid with a new bicycle, or something similar! You're quite welcome, and I'm very familiar withy he feeling. Enjoy.
