Green band is still here

I believe Guy posted that the green band was not yet fixed. This has to do with a bright light source hitting the part of the sensor that is just out of the image area and is a nasty problem to fix.

Chimpers, check your shots.

Ed,

I think someone has posted that serial numbers seem to be all over the place. Mine was new at the end of January, and came with firmware 1.09 pre-installed but only has a serial number of 31000302. Maybe mine was one that was sent back and re-manufactured. The box was sealed when I got it, so it had obviously come straight from Leica and given the scramble for M8's at that time, was not going to have sat around unsold for a couple of months. Mine turns on straight away and always has apart from the two days when I had 1.091 installed.

Wilson

Wilson I think you have a extra zero in your serial number, should be 3100302.

I got mine at the end of January also, 25th to be exact, and yes I think mine was one that never sold before the recall. Whether it was already at a dealer or still in the Leica distribution channel is anyone's guess.

Is yours chrome? Mine is.

With the 302 serial that is a early one, if the serial numbers mean anything.

But in any event the newer ones are showing serial numbers in the 6-7-8 thousand range. I wouldn't think any company would make big jumps in serial numbers and then go back to earlier numbers.

This is why I think the cameras are not 'faulty' as such. Firmware made a difference to yours. I am sure mine used to turn on with 1.09, but from 1.092 required a shutter press. I have e-mailed Leica with a description of the 'problem' and will report back with what ever they say....

Guy...those corners look pretty cyan to me. You think that's as good as it's going to get?

Read the Wate filtered thread.

Hmm..I'm not getting red corners with my B+W 486 using the CV 15, coded as 16mm WATE.

Carl,

Now that your CV 15 is coded as 16mm WATE, which view finder are you using - 15mm or 21mm?

Helene

Helene,

I'm using the 21mm CV finder.

the WATE instructions on the Leica website say NOT to use an IR filter in fluorescent light on lenses from 16 to 28mm, due to the inconsistency of the color.....

so, do I do? or do I don't? just got even a bit more complicated...

I presume no provision to manually enter what lens is on the camera? I'll upload my 1.102 when I get home this evening. Thanks, Guy. Keep up the good work. You too Sean - wondered where you were. No new articles on your site for forever.

Steve

Hi Steve,

I've been shooting and travelling since late February. As far as work to help Leica with the evolution of the M8, several of us here are actively involved with that. The equipment stuff is important but my concentration for March was on photography itself: 7-10 hours a day on work I chose.

Cheers,

Sean

Can anyone tell me if it is okay for M8 firmware update from 1.09 to 1.102 without performing the 1.092 firmware update? TIA.

no problems that I could tell. I bypassed the 1.092 cause i was happy with 1.9.

and, frankly, i may switch back because of the shutter noise. earlier i mentioned that it was something i could live with, but tonight i knocked off about a hundred frames at my grandson's birthday party at one of the LOUDEST places in north america--Chucky Cheese Pizza, and it seemed even louder than it did at home.

From first loading and turning on with the new firmware I am experiencing the menu rapidly scrolling through numerous menus like a slot machine at an arcade. No triple 7's or payout though:). At least on mine, they haven't fixed this yet. It appears to be intermitent and only after first turning it on an selecting menu and starting to scroll. Once it stops it doesn't repeat until powered off and allowed to rest for a while.

here is what i got at 16mm with the B+W

wow, pretty green. Is this with the new FW?

Maybe the B+W are different, or the adjustment needs tweaking, but I would rather live with a little magenta rather than this color shift.

Guy is one of several here who are actively involved in communications with Leica.

Cheers,

Sean

Sean and I are the most publically vocal with communications, another words we talk about what we say in public but there are other beta testers here as well that work very hard at getting leica the info they need. Sean has just been absent for a couple weeks with work down in Florida but still a vital force with communications and advice to Leica. So really let's pass the credit around too, it's not all me and i do appreciate the thank you's but many including all of this forum are very involved in the future of leica products.

Hi Helene,

I use the 21mm.

Ed,

Slip of the finger late at night on small iBook keyboard, as you said, one zero too many. I bought this chrome M8 from Leica Spain in Grenada. I was concerned when before buying, I saw the early serial number but they confirmed in writing to me, that this was a post sensor revision camera. The fact that it came sealed in the box with 1.09 installed rather than 1.06, would indicate that this was correct. Now I think there are quite a few more black ones out there than chrome, so they may just have allocated a batch of numbers to chrome bodies, pre-stamped the chrome shoes and this did not get used until January. I suppose I could ask the factory to confirm the manufacture date and whether this should go back for a sensor revision. In that I have not seen any banding or green ghosts and I take a lot of night-time photos, I think it must be a later sensor one. Where people have had their camera replaced in toto, I cannot imagine that the factory throws away the faulty unit but would re-manufacture it. Now if they do that, I have no idea if they would allocate a new serial number or just reuse the original one for tracking purposes.

Do I understand correctly that if you are using a coded lens with UV/IR filter you should set the Lens Detection to On + UV/IR? Alternately, if you are just udisng coede lenses without the UV/IR filter you just set to lens detection on. Is this correct?

So now I have B&W filters and the firmware, seems now its just that I need some Leica filters for my wide angels.

If Leica is correct I will just have to wait 7 more weeks for E55.

Leica says:

13413 Filter E55 UV/IR schwarz ab KW 22

13414 Filter E60 UV/IR schwarz ab KW 21

13415 Filter E67 UV/IR schwarz ab KW 24

13419 Filter E 55 UV/IR silbern ab KW 24

Cheers, Tom

Dear M8 Fans...

On/Off Switch!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem with my M8, and i thought, that it was also after the last firmwareupdate - but my shop here in Berlin told me, that the on/off switch has a defect.

So we send the camera to solms and after 14 days they sent it back and everything was as usual.

So you do not have to push the trigger after turning the camera on - that is not normal and as Leica tols me it has nothing to do with the firmware.

Within that repairment they adjusted also the Bajonett, because it was so hard to change lenses, much harder than with my m6 - now it works equal to the m6.

To check if you have a defect on/off switch, do the following:

Turn the camera on in absolutely slow motion, with a little bit of pressure to the switch, try it several times...

If the camera turns on now, with this solw-mo procedure, you have a defect switch.

You have to try it, it does not work all the time, you have to figure ot the right speed for this procedere.

By the way, the strange thing with the switch is, that only the on/off procedere behaves like i explained, the other switch positions worked normal with my m8...

Good luck,

yours Ekki

I need help.

Just went to the Leica AG site (German as well as English) and downloaded 1.102, but my laptop refuses to open the download.

I have a Power Book G4 and use Safari. When I double klick the download, which is just a bland square, Safari comes up and says there is no application to open the zip file.

Strangely, I downloaded 1.092 some time ago with no problems and installed in on my M8.

Since I have booked a trip to Bali and Japan starting Wednesday next week, I am somewhat disconcerted.

Can anyone help? I am completely computer ignorant, just use it for e-mail, internet, to make slides for talks etc., but no technical ability.

Thanks,

Teddy
