maxofrome Posted September 12, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the chance to use for few day an M2 before to decide to buy it or not. The camera is in good condition (for one lady coming from the '50) with few sign of use. What is annoying me, is that the viewfinder is a bit dirty, so when I frame, I can see some spot of dust (I suppose ..). Any possible way to clean up such camera or better to send to service it ? Advertisement Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Hi maxofrome, Take a look here Leica M2 a bit dirty.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jerzy Posted September 12, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2013 I assume that you cleaned front window and viefinder lens outside surfaces already. What you can still do is to unscrew the lens from viewfinder (rear of camera, where you look through, use special clamp or rubber to unscrew ) cleans the lens inner surface and possibly as well lens which is located deeper. Anything else requires dismanteling, i.e. removal of top cover, dismounting the viefinder, so I would leave to it the repairman. jerzy
maxofrome Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted September 14, 2013 Thanks for the tips. I am quite sure the issue is affecting the rangefinder window because when I put a finger in from the spot of dust disappear. Now, being a camera I shall buy, hot dust can affect this window? Probably it was already opened and not closed with care. Any tips?
earleygallery Posted September 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 15, 2013 It could be dust or it might be damage to reflective coatings in the rangefinder.
maxofrome Posted September 17, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted September 17, 2013 thanks, all. I have seen even that the rangefinder is not aligned vertically. A behavior I have never seen.
jerzy Posted September 17, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 17, 2013 Not unusual, CLA needed. However is silvering is damaged and prohibits correct adjustment repair can be pretty expensive

However is silvering is damaged and prohibits correct adjustment repair can be pretty expensive thanks a lot. The camera is offered to me for around 500€ but if CLA is needed plus some other repair probably it can cost me a lot.
luigi bertolotti Posted September 17, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 17, 2013 Unless you can have a quotation for a good overhaul from a reputable repair shop, I agree that 500€ can be risky.... for less than twice one can find a good user body with a decent warranty. philipus Posted September 23, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 23, 2013 About vertical misalignment and service of viewfinders. My experience is that not all service points give the same results. My M4 had that when I bought it and the viewfinder was also not entirely clear, but rather a tiny bit yellowish. After a 200€ service by a technician here in Holland it came back with the finder a bit clearer and the vertical alignment corrected. After I crashed with my bicycle, the rangefinder became misaligned again, this time at infinity. I sent it to Leica in Solms to have this corrected. The camera returned with the viewfinder in, simply put, an amazing state. The misalignment is gone, naturally, but the viewfinder is incredibly clear and the rangefinder patch very, very bright and crisp. It is a night-and-day difference. The price for the service was not that much more than what I paid the first time but the improvements far outweigh the price difference. The below photo doesn't really do it justice but hopefully it gives an indication of what can be achieved by those who know what they're doing. Cheers Philip Welcome, dear visitor!
