Pelpa78 Posted September 5, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought a new Leica M 240. I have only one battery but I see that a new one is bloody expensive (about 190 dollars). Does anyone know where to find reliable Leica unofficial battery for the M? thx
Advertisement Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Hi Pelpa78, Take a look here Leica M 240 battery. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 5, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 5, 2013 I don't think there are any. But why try and save 70$ when you have just bought a 7000 $ camera? There are third-party batteries for the M8/9/MM, but over the years there has not been one that was completely free of issues. I doubt it will be different for the M, even if Chinese battery clones come to the market in the future.
Pelpa78 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted September 5, 2013 But why try and save 70$ when you have just bought a 7000 $ camera? Precisely because I spent already 7000$ (it was a huge expense for me) I do not want to keep on spending... I just bought a new backpack (100$) and a half case (130$) in order to protect it. Now the additional battery... It could be a neverending spending... If the difference in just 70$, I know it would be better the official battery... I though it could had been far less cheap... like 20/30 dollars per battery...
jaapv Posted September 5, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 5, 2013 It could - and probably will be some time in the future. But if the M9 batteries are anything to go ,by, the electronics will have to be retro-engineered, which means that the communication with the camera will be flakey - not indicating the state of charge, for instance. The M appears to be sensitive to the behaviour of the battery too.
pedaes Posted September 5, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 5, 2013 The good news is that after a couple of recharging cycles the battery seems to cope with 8gb of images if you don't use liveview all the time ( I have no experience of shooting continually with liveview so others might advise). If you are using the camera to the point where this is insufficient capacity between charges, then the second battery would seem good value. The bad news is some would advise a spare charger as well! Don't let these little things spoil what is a great camera, and hope you enjoy as much as many here.
jaapv Posted September 5, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2013 A spare charger is less expensive than a spare battery And there are no third-party chargers either - I have been looking....
Pelpa78 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted September 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why a spare charger? I would be charging the second battery while I am using the first one...
jaapv Posted September 5, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 5, 2013 It is essential if you are far away from supplies - in the middle of the bush a broken charger is a disaster.

uskoeln Posted September 5, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 5, 2013 What I have read, DSTE should be a reliable supplier. But they do not deliver to Germany, UK, Italy, .... so it seems to be clear that the main buyer is protecting his markets. Holland is OK, maybe Jaap can organize some batteries ;-) Uwe Sent from my iPhone using Forum Runner

darylgo Posted September 6, 2013 Share #14 Posted September 6, 2013 M9 generics were cheap otoh very expensive. After using the generic battery the camera electronics became less reliable and eventually had to be sent to Leica for replacement. In addition the charger now misbehaves, it works but the battery level indication will flash wildly until the battery is removed and placed again. I'll never buy another generic, a savings of a few dollars can cost much more in repairs and the inconvenience of malfunctioning camera/charger. Can the behavior of the M9 be generalized to the M? The risk is too great for the small savings.
lct Posted September 6, 2013 Share #15 Posted September 6, 2013 Never heard of a body needing repairs because of generic batteries so far. As far as my M8.2 is concerned, generic batteries need just to be fully discharged in the camera before recharging them to avoid false meter readings. Can't wait to test one on my M240. algrove Posted September 6, 2013 Share #16 Posted September 6, 2013 The M battery is made in Indonesia by Varta. Just so everyone knows, the M9 replacement batteries B&H sells are very good, hold a charge and seem to communicate with the M9 just fine. They cost $15 each. jaapv Posted September 6, 2013 Share #17 Posted September 6, 2013 The plastic bag they come in says made for Varta in Indonesia, but the battery itself is marked made in Korea, so I guess Indonesia only makes the packaging

algrove Posted September 6, 2013 Share #19 Posted September 6, 2013 So that's curious. All my plastic bags say "Made by Varta in Indonesia". But then when I look very closely at the battery itself it says "Leica Camera Korea Ltd." So the plastic is made in Indonesia and the battery in Korea as you wisely point out. So now Leica has a Korean factory or sourcing center in Korea it seems. Sounds reasonable.
