Shopping assistance for Leica

Let me speak up for the M6 LHSA. I love the black Leica logo. And the paint. And it's fully manual like the MP.

But to avoid the flare in the rangefinder when facing a light source get a new MP or M7.

Also, I have a deep and unsatisfied LUST for the M7 titanium!

I should have added to my question which one of these would you also like to use. It appears that the MP is leading in that area but I would like to know the reason since the M7 has the electronic shutter?

Aha, user!

MP, the correct exposure becomes your own craft after some time of use.

But if you are an addicted all auto SLR user an M7 might just do the trick.

If you're >using< the cam no Leica is to be called an investment.

Second hand vallue is omething else, the MP does better than the M7 now,

in two years?, no clue.

After having enjoyed an M6 for over 20 years (bought one of the first ones!...), I splurged on an M7 three years ago and have to say that it is the best M from a user perspective that I have ever owned.

I did consider the MP at that time and decided against it; the aperture priority auto feature of the M7 was a great plus for me. Don't get me wrong - my experience based exposure guessing without a meter comes to within 1 stop, but nothing beats an electronic stepless shutter.

As to the best investment - the M6 was the only Leica I ever bought new, I simply had to have it. It cost me US$1300 is 1984. It's probably worth about US$1000 today, but the pleasure using it cannot be counted in $$$ figures.

The M7 I bought used - 3 years ago, cost me US$1600 on eBay, for another US$250 I had the finder upgrade done at New Jersey and if I wanted to sell today, I'd get my money back.

Same would apply today - and that is where my recommendation in regards to 'best investment' is leading to: ......Buy used - if you decide that you don't like the camera in a few years, the financial loss will be minimal. There will be more and more used M7's and MP's coming on the market in the near future, with some owners switching to the M8....

If you are planning to use the camera (and I hope you are!:) ), stay away from the various "collector" editions - the LHSA, MP-3 etc. While their esthetics are wonderful, the resale value after regular use will be very uncertain.

Just my 2 cents...

All the best,

Jan
