storing spare SD cards in bag, no case.

Apart from an extra layer of protection, I use cases or SD wallets for better organization, identification of cards (used/unused, etc). And on a trip, I don't keep used cards in any bag that could be stolen. The gear can be replaced, not the pics.

Sticking them individually in your bag is more of an issue of not finding them easily or losing them entirely either in the dark recesses of the bag or having them fall out, etc.. Plus it's probably best to be a bit more organized and secure as Jeff S points out.

 

It's better to at least stick them in a small plastic bag than just loose, imho. But as an alternative, these are good organizers and are the size of a credit card so that you can also stick them in a shirt pocket: Amazon.com: YELLOW - SD Card Case, Credit Card Size Secure Digital Memory Card Case & Holder: Camera & Photo
