Phil75 Posted August 14, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anybody already found an alternative (plastic) lens hood for the X Vario with a more acceptable price tag for such a simple product? Screw-in lens hoods made from rubber are widely available (hama, B+W, etc.), however that's not what I am looking for, I'd prefer a cylindric one. Thank you. Advertisement Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hi Phil75, Take a look here Alternative X Vario lens hood ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rsh Posted August 14, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2013 I have the Leica Lens hood and I would not use another manufacturer's lens hood, but I am OCD in that regard. The Leica lens hood is specifically designed for the X Vario.
dkCambridgeshire Posted August 15, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 15, 2013 Has anybody already found an alternative (plastic) lens hood for the X Vario with a more acceptable price tag for such a simple product? Screw-in lens hoods made from rubber are widely available (hama, B+W, etc.), however that's not what I am looking for, I'd prefer a cylindric one. Thank you. It's not such a simple product as it might appear. It's designed specifically for the camera and not that much more expensive that other manufacturers' dedicated hoods costing £65 - £75. One possible but bulky alternative would be to use a Cokin A Series 43mm adaptor ring , Cokin filter holder and two Cokin clip on hoods ... total cost approx £40. But would also need a regular 43mm filter mount ( i.e. filter mount minus its filter glass) between the lens and the Cokin adaptor to allow sufficient clearance for the X Vario lens to fully retract. The 43mm filter glass is easily removed from its mount - just remove the circlip. The Cokin holder might foul the camera's AF assist lamp. dunk
vcs700s Posted August 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 15, 2013 I have the Leica Lens hood and I would not use another manufacturer's lens hood, but I am OCD in that regard. The Leica lens hood is specifically designed for the X Vario. Yes, made for the X Vario. I am sorry but I don't understand spending close to $3000 on a camera and being too cheap to buy the manufacturers hood for a little over $100. It is designed specifically for the X Vario, fits perfectly, doesn't vignette and looks great plus it comes with a lens cap. I have Leica lens hoods on my two lenses and the X Vario and am very impressed by them.

I just wish they were more readily available.
brill64 Posted August 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2013 I recently found a 43mm round aluminum hood in Sham Shui Po, HKG, which has a secondary thread that I can screw a polarizing filter into for approx US$9-. It's a bit shorter & a lot smaller than the original X-Vario hood but seems to work okie without vignetting. The thing about the original hood is that there's no secondary thread plus it's so huge. Anyway, I'm just going to try it & see how it works out.
Bill W Posted August 20, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) B & H has the X Vario hood in stock it says. I ordered one. They are $109 and free shipping.
brill64 Posted September 1, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 1, 2013 well..my alternative hood mentioned above vignettes in the corners at 28mm with a normal, non-slim polarising filter attached. It's okie at 35mm, though. I've also found that with the original round Leica hood attached & when using the X-Vario pop up flash, I get a strange, dark shadow appearing at bottom right of frames from 35-28mm. This appeared on 5 consecutive frames by two different users & doesn't seem to be fingers in the way. Is anyone else also seeing this?

So I will also source and buy a JJC or similar hood with the necessary adaptor. I could buy a slim polariser but it's not a cost effective solution. dunk

Phil75 Posted September 4, 2013 Author Share #13 Posted September 4, 2013 Does the original lens hood also cause vignetting if used screwed onto a normal B+W F-Pro filter? Or does this just happen with an eventually thicker polarising filter? Thank you.
Bill W Posted September 4, 2013 Share #14 Posted September 4, 2013 I just received the hood and a B+W pola filter. I did not notice any vignetting.
dkCambridgeshire Posted September 4, 2013 Share #15 Posted September 4, 2013 I just received the hood and a B+W pola filter. I did not notice any vignetting. Have you tried it at the widest zoom setting? My regular brand polariser is fine for most of the zoom range but at the widest zoom setting the image is vignetted by the hood. dunk

dkCambridgeshire Posted September 4, 2013 Share #17 Posted September 4, 2013 This is what happened when I first used a polariser on my XV - with the XV hood screwed into the polariser. Vignetting was immediately obvious - so the lens was zoomed in slightly until the vignetting disappeared. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Vignetting with polariser and hood at the widest 18mm zoom setting No noticeable vignetting with polariser and hood at 21.5mm zoom setting. Both images taken at f5. But ... this was the result with a regular mount thickness 43mm polariser ... not a thin mount type. I may decide to buy a thin type circular polariser if more wide angle landscapes are planned - but for the time being can manage without provided the lens is zoomed in slightly. Rosebud55 Posted September 4, 2013 Share #18 Posted September 4, 2013 I have the leica x vario lens hood for my camera. I tried to fit it today onto a rodenstock uv filter but it didn't fit. Does anyone else have this problem?

Does anyone else have this problem? If the filter fits on your camera, the hood should fit on the filter. I have B+W and they work fine with the hood. Does anyone else have this problem? Check the Rodenstock's female filter thread for damage; try screwing another 43mm filter filter into it; if the filters do not screw together there is something wrong with the UV filter's female thread.
