jaapv Posted August 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Walking along with my M, not photographing much and certainly no keepers, suddenly my RF was massively off - about half the rangefinder patch at infinity. Once home the focussing was well off at all distances - easy to see using the EVF. I got out my trusty Allen key and by not paying attention turned it the wrong way initially - luckily. Out came a very small, maybe 1/2 mm piece of white stuff, most likely paper (or lint from a cotton glove?) After adjustment everything was spot-on at all distances again.... That miniscule piece of whatever had made a 90 degree adjustment neccessary when it dislodged.

colonel Posted August 6, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 6, 2013 Interesting Are you implying a piece of paper blew in, or more likely was "factory installed", and knocked it off ? I also heard from many sources that the RF on digital Leicas couldn't be accurately adjusted manually ? Best Rgds
jaapv Posted August 6, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted August 6, 2013 I have no idea where it came from, but seeing that the camera was spot-on out of the box I would say it lodged there during assembly.. And yes, adjusting can be quite a fiddle, but in this case I was lucky : single cause -single solution. Had the camera been off at any distance after setting infinity I would have sent it in. Jeff S Posted August 6, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 6, 2013 Now you're in trouble; that was the secret shim that Leica uses to improve tolerances with the M's RF, without changing the structure itself. Jeff

I wonder how often equipment is checked for accuracy by owners - I know I don't do it myself, which means the opportunity only arises when I send them in for service. Like every 3-5 years. Hmmm. jaapv Posted August 6, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted August 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, my protocol is that if I see something out of the ordinary in my range/viewfinder or on my photographs it is time to find out what is going on... I this case the original fault was glaringly obvious and I checked the result of my adjustment on a tripod, matching optimum focus of the rangefinder against focus peaking in the EVF at various distances, using my Summicron 35, Summilux 50 asph and Elmarit-M 90 all wide open, those being the lenses I am 100% sure of. 250swb Posted August 6, 2013 Share #14 Posted August 6, 2013 Clearly when you bought it Leica were already so far behind they were making employees eat lunch at their workstation. Instead of the sandwich wrapper you could have got a prawn lodged in there, so be thankful. Steve

D&A Posted August 7, 2013 Share #18 Posted August 7, 2013 It's so obvious what that piece of paper was! Ever open a newly wrapped dress shirt and there's a tiny little white piece of paper that falls out with the writing "QC inspected by # 41"? They had to put it somewhere!
