fiftyfive Posted August 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) This weekend I was a few shots into a roll, when the camera wouldn't allow the film to advance or the shutter release...camera immoblized. The LEDs were dark so I put in new batteries and another roll. Same no advance/no release, except this time the metering function appeared to work properly. Any ideas about what might be wrong? Advertisement Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Hi fiftyfive, Take a look here M7 Locked Up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
enboe Posted August 7, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 7, 2013 Perhaps there's a miscommunication between the ISO dial on the back and the camera. Try manually setting your ISO. Any change? Remove the film, remove the battery, set to 1/60 sec, and try firing. Any luck? Is the shutter cocked? That's what I would try before sending it in. Good luck. fiftyfive Posted August 7, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted August 7, 2013 Thanks Enboe - I tried your suggestions in order but still no luck. The advance lever is actually "locked" such that I can't even wind the leader of a new roll onto the takeup spool. This is where shutter release is usually done to allow an advance, but the shutter won't release whether in auto, manual exposure, or 125/60 mode. It's puzzling. One note is that the batteries were pretty fresh, but when the "lock-up" occurred they were drained and the LEDs were dark. New batteries got the metering LEDs going, but no change mechanically whatever the mode.
menos I M6 Posted August 14, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2013 I had this a while ago with my M7: - advance lever is locked up - shutter is partly wound - shutter release button is inoperable - film rewind lever can be flipped - bottom plate can be removed/attached without problems - film rewind works normally - camera has fresh batteries, but LCD isn't active My M7 has been discarded and is on the pile of gear awaiting repair (I never got to ship it in). DON'T FORCE ANYTHING NOW! It is a mechanical problem of the film advance - force will damage the camera. If a change to proven, fresh batteries does not revive the camera, you have to ship it in to a Leica repair tech (I talked with Sherry Krauter, next to Leica in Germany, she also does work on the M7, she said, when I inquired). Good luck and please keep us updated.

They may have changed their attitude lately this was 2 years ago.
alun Posted August 14, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 14, 2013 This happened to my M6 but in terms of film rewind I believe the M7 is fundamentally the same. The problem is mechanical and as I recall when mine was repaired I was told that a gear in the rewind arm mechanism had slipped. The repair is a simple one, I think. acmineiro Posted September 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is the shutter release stuck in a depressed state? I had a problem with my M7 where the shutter release was stuck in the depressed state after a fall. I managed to loosen it without any force and it worked fine after that. menos I M6 Posted September 17, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 17, 2013 Is the shutter release stuck in a depressed state? I had a problem with my M7 where the shutter release was stuck in the depressed state after a fall. I managed to loosen it without any force and it worked fine after that. With mine the shutter release is "blocked" in unreleased state. It feels similar to what the release would feel on a working M7, when the on/off switch is on "off". The same for the advance lever - it cannot be moved past it's fold out position.
underground Posted November 7, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 7, 2013 Same happened with my M7, and I figured out that the shutter release button needed to be pulled out. It happened while I was using a cable release. It works great now. I no longer use that P.O.S cable release.
