jeffnesh Posted August 4, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I have the option of purchasing a new M-E or an M9 upgraded to an M9-P with about 3K shutter clicks at a lower cost. Knowing they're functionally the same, any thoughts on new vs. used, upgraded "M9-P", etc.? Thanks!
Advertisement Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Hi jeffnesh, Take a look here New M-E vs. Used, upgraded M9-P?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Salander Posted August 4, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2013 I would go with the M9-P. Such a beautiful camera!
Guest malland Posted August 4, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 4, 2013 I'd go with the new M-E with a two-year warranty, and I wouldn't have to worry about buying a used camera. —Mitch/Bangkok Surabaya-Johnny
StephenPatterson Posted August 4, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 4, 2013 I'd go with the new M-E with a two-year warranty, and I wouldn't have to worry about buying a used camera. —Mitch/Bangkok Surabaya-Johnny +1 Besides the obvious advantages that Mitch has mentioned an "upgraded" M9 to M9-P is not worth as much as an "original" M9-P in the secondary market, just as an M8U does not bring as much as an original factory M8.2 (at least in Hong Kong). Guest malland Posted August 4, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 4, 2013 I would go with the M9-P. Such a beautiful camera!Heh-heh. I do have a black M9-P, which I purchased new at the end of February in Paris. Actually, I had decided to buy an M-E, but the dealer had a new M9-P still at the promotional price from Leica that had terminated on December 31, and that turned out to be only a few hundred US dollars more than the M-E. The M9-P may be beautiful, but I find the huge writing on the top plate to be garish and distracting, so have covered this with black electrical tape. —Mitch/Bangkok Surabaya-Johnny
FlashGordonPhotography Posted August 4, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 4, 2013 3K is nothing. I like my frame line selector, so I'd go for the m9. You may prefer the new colour of the M-E. How much warranty left on the M9P? Gordon
jaques Posted August 4, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) if it was chrome- I think I would go for the M9-P. To my mind it is the best looking/best finish of all the M digital cameras to date. Plus you have the sapphire screen, frame selector, usb port. I don't think the Leica script is garish either. I think it is classic.
viramati Posted August 4, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 4, 2013 As much as the M9-P is the looker of the 2 and the chrome version will wear very well I would probably take the ME just because of the 2 year warranty and just add a Giottos screen protector (cost £20 or so and have had one on my M9 for 2 years without a scratch). USB isn't really an issue for most of us as a card reader is better for transfer. Frame-line lever can have its uses but for me wouldn't be a deal breaker. As an aside I have to say I sold my m9-P upgraded from the M9 for exactly the same sort of price as a regular M9-P
}{B Posted August 4, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 4, 2013 I'd go for the M-E as well then you have the comfort of the warranty which I believe can be extended for a further year at a price. In the UK there seems to be a disparity in pricing for a new M-E. I've seen figures ranging from £3700 up to £4200 quoted with a mid point around £3990. Of course not all who advertise the lower prices seem to have them in stock.
Paul J Posted August 4, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 4, 2013 DO you need a USB Port? I do so I would go for the M9-P.
jeffnesh Posted August 5, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted August 5, 2013 Thanks, all. Decided to go with the M-E when I found one in stock. Like the comfort of the warranty, and never use USB. Thanks for all the thoughtful suggestions. Can't wait for it to arrive. -Jeff

Garish Leica script? Anyway chrome M9P best looking digital Leica model ever. I have an M240 now in black and miss that one...I did trade it though for something even better looking: a chrome MP

tobey bilek Posted August 6, 2013 Share #17 Posted August 6, 2013 No USB or frame preview on ME. You may not care. I download from the USB as it is not a wear point like card connector. A camera with 3000 is like new. Why was it sold? Worst case a lemon. Best case an estate sale or just upgrade or the owner just did not get on with a RF if he had a slr. It is an acquired taste and the usefulness is past its prime for pro photography. Try to get a shop warrantee for more than 30 days. Do not buy without a warrantee. Battery may or may not be as new. Mike T 1969 Posted August 7, 2013 Share #18 Posted August 7, 2013 Both are Leicas. Go with the one you "like". If you care about aesthetics and don't like the M-E get the M9. If you don't care about looks and can live without the frame selector, get a new M-E with a warranty. Personally, I bought a new M-E to go with my M6. I love them both. The sooner you decide the sooner you are enjoying photographing with it.
Shade Posted August 8, 2013 Share #19 Posted August 8, 2013 They are only (mostly) comestic differences. Any other differences are insignificant to me. Get the one you like better..
digitalpowershot Posted August 9, 2013 Share #20 Posted August 9, 2013 M9-P for me every time, especially if chrome. From a subjective point of view, the BLACK MP&M9P/MM are the most beautiful Leicas up to date.
