I noticed it this morning. I took some images and saw an odd black line and a parallel shadow in the upper right corner. I thought it might be crud on the lens, so I switched one out. Same results. I did not know how a cracked sensor appeared, but figured I was looking at the tell-tales signs. So I went on line to confirm my suspicions.

I immediately got on the phone to Dale in Florida. I bought this camera from them two years ago. It was a demo/refurbished unit. The nice fellow on the phone immediately made the diagnosis, and he said, to my great relief, that Leica will cover the cost of replacement because it is considered a defect. I was covered the other way because my factory warranty is for two years and does not expire until the end of the month.

So I will ship the camera to Dale who will forward to Leica/NJ.

Since it will be in their hands is there anything I should have them do or look at while the camera is still under warranty. Or will the factory do diagnostics as a matter of course.

Thanks

David

My experience as well. Sorry to have another member of our club.

Truth be told, I am OK with it. It did not happen while on another trip of a lifetime. It happened under regular warranty which provides an added layer of protection. I will get a new sensor which has to be a good thing for the longevity of the camera, and Leica will do a full body search at a time when the camera, again, is fully covered. I will just be without it for a few weeks. That is a good trade.

Have there been any issues with the new sensor?

Tx all,

My second hand M9 had a cracked sensor from the start (800 actuations from the origin). My dealer in Geneva has sent it immediately to Leica under guarantee and most importantly has lent me another M9 they had for sale to use during my vacation. This is REAL Leica level service.

Good to know. I am actually going to Alaska for the first time at the end of the month and had planned to take the M9 along, as well as the Rollei 6008i kit for landscapes. I will have to see if Dale has such a loaner policy. Perhaps a 240?.......
