Leica 21mm f/1.4 Backfocus Normal?

I just bought (new) a 21mm f/1.4 and have observed that it universally backfocuses more than I am used to as "normal." As an indication of severity, on a ruler photographed at a 45 degree angle, my camera focuses 1-2" behind the intended focus point. I tested against two other lenses, which focus at the point expected. Finally, when I looked at Lloyd Chambers' review of this lens (after noticing this behavior), he notes that his copy has moderate-high backfocus as well.

While I can tolerate the behavior if this is "normal" (every lens has compromises), I certainly don't want to pay this kind of money if this behavior is worse than normal for this lens. Thanks.

I would definitely ask for another lens.

Ill give you my recent experience. I bought a 28 Cron new and the first three copies I was given were all back focussing significantly. They were all tested with my body and this was confimed.

It was only by the FOURTH lens that I was given a copy that was within spec. Leica Australia even acknowledged it as an issue (they were very good throughout) and were quick to send me replacements.

For the money you have paid for the 21, I would demand a replacement as soon as possible.

It is marginally worrying from my perspective re Leica QC given that I haven't had any issues with Leica gear and QC at all in the past.

I've just replied to your pm.

As you noticed, in 2010 I posted in the forum that my 1.4/21 Summilux backfocused (but not to the extend of yours). Was sent back to Leica for adjustment and came back perfect.
