FIRMWARE - I give up on the M9

It appears that Leica has no interest in fixing the firmware for our M9, M-E.

What arguments could anyone offer to oppose my abandoning Leica?

The M9 might operate adequately in other than demanding professional circumstances, so is that their market target? Idle amateurs? SHAME on Leica if that is true.n How else can we interpret their effort, or lack of it?

I'm out of the market as of now

I never did the final upgrade because, as I understand, it breaks the functionality of tethering?

Tethering still works with Mac (10.8.4) and Image Capture (6.2).

Cheers, Pico. That's interesting. Although I'm reluctant to upgrade now given the fact everything seems to be working OK.

I have no argument at all to oppose you. Do what is right for you. THough I am curious as to what issues with the firmware in particular are you having?

Only that I like the little lenses and the ease of manual focus. I'm keeping a close eye on Fuji. I heard that, on updating their firmware recently (to 3?) an issue arose with movie mode. A day later another firmware update was available. That's customer service for you. Leica seem to rest on their laurels. If you want to stay at being number one you've to act as though you're number two. Leica's dragging of feet comes over as, at best, ineptitude, and at worse, arrogance.

None. I might even be able take some lenses off of your hands.:D

I doubt you would want my lenses. 50mm Canon f/.95, 50mm Summitar, 35mm Summilux V2, 75mm Summilux, 15mm Voightlander.

Besides I still have several film M models and a 4/3 system.

So why would Leica or anyone care whether you give up on your M9?

Michael,

While Leica may not care if Pico gives up his M9, they should care about why he wants to give it up. I can see Pico's point here. The digital M's have a history of buggy electronic issues, which, in my experience is more prevalent than I experience with my other digital cameras. However, the other manufacturers are very responsive in issuing firmware fixes for the glitches. Leica is not and this, for me, erodes my confidence in: a) Leica's ability to produce cutting edge digital imaging technology/features and B) Leica's desire to support aging models over time. If we are talking about a $399 digicam... Well who cares? But it is a $7,000 instrument.

So, while I'm not at the point where I'm ready to abandon the digital M's, I think Leica should care that loyal customers are growing weary of $7,000+ cameras with buggy firmware and slow updates.

When I contacted Leica tech in NJ last November they replied that they were pretty certain the next firmware release would address the fault but when I checked back in June of this year they had no idea "when" a release was scheduled.

I have to agree that while you can downgrade to the older firmware version (which I did) it is something that needs to be addressed. I for one like to use the discreet mode and Leica obviously felt compelled to update the FW for other reasons (battery being one).

Hopefully they will realize they need to do at least one more FW update to bring some closure to this mess.
