elansprint72 Posted April 8, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted April 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Horsey wind pump, Norfolk. The fens for miles around are drained by pumps, all electric these days, unfortunately. The first shot inside shows the head gears of the pump; the large bevel gear is attached to the sails on a hefty shaft, around the outside of this gear is a brake band; the other bevel gear drives a vertical shaft down through the mill to ground level. Shot #3 shows the bottom of the vertical shaft; another set of bevels takes the drive outside to the water pump. Notice that the teeth on the large gear are made from wood and can be replaced when worn. Similar wooden gear sets have been used in the Middle East to pump water since historic times. stuny Posted April 9, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 9, 2007 Pete - Â Very nice reportage series, and terrific framing, tonal range and contrast.
andybarton Posted April 9, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 9, 2007 These are great, Pete. I think that your B&W work, for subjects like this, is currently streets ahead of your colour stuff. Which of your many cameras were these shot with? Â Numver 1 is my favourite here. If it were mine, I'd crop just a smidge off the bottom
azzo Posted April 9, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 9, 2007 Very nice series Pete. Personally, and if I had to select a favourite, i'd go for the 2nd for it's fantastic tonal range and framing. Â Â Azzo
jmr Posted April 9, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted April 9, 2007 Pete, Â nicely done. The second is my favourite - for the same reasons as Ivan.

elansprint72 Posted April 13, 2007 Author Share #8  Posted April 13, 2007 Thanks for the kind words folks! These were taken with the D2, in colour and converted in PS. I really must try it out in B&W mode  I have some shots taken by my Dad during WW2 of these ancient wooden gear wheels in Egypt and Italy, they are captioned "Sakias", which I had to look up and it means "water scoop", they are used for irrigation of crops- the opposite of what "my" gears are used for- pumping the land dry!
