We all follow like sheep

In 1985 I bought an M3 from 1956. I used it for 17 years without trouble, but then its slow speeds started playing up. Earlier this year my M6 from 1995 needed work on its slow speeds. I have had much the same experience with another brand.

This forum may not be the right place to say "Leica not for me." I for one shall not try to persuade you to remain a sheep.

No camera is perfection, or any type of tool. As the artisan you need to really know and understand the weaknesses and shortcomings of your gear, relative to how you want to use it. It is assumed you will already know it's virtues which is why you choose it. Weigh the perceived advantages against the understood disadvantages. Simply put, the tilt of the 'scales' tells you if the camera is for you or not. Make it more complicated if you wish, by adding emotion into the equation. It's up to you.

As a point of interest I have taken three Leica cameras and a bag of lenses across the Sahara. I also took three Leica cameras and the bag of lenses to the Antarctic. Both events some years ago now. All that gear is still fully functional and operational. Some have had a CLA because they are more than twenty years old. But then so am I and I have had the odd CLA too! ;)

Brian: Please, please, please listen! I've got one or two things to say.

The Crowd: Tell us! Tell us both of them!

Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!

The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!

Brian: You're all different!

The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!

Man in crowd: I'm not...

The Crowd: Sch!

I have gone mental

For some reason I have it in my mind that my ol' Nikon SLR's are more sturdy and rugged than my rangefinders (M3 and R3M). And that the VF's are more prone to misalignment even though I have NEVER had this happen. Please bring me back to reality so I can get back to my RF's.

For almost a decade I have had only RFDR cameras for film, having sold the SLRs. This is although I know that the finders of RFDR cameras are their weak spot. But I have had trouble with finders in all kinds of camera, so perhaps I am not mental after all.
