I just ordered my Luigi M8 aged brown half case with grip and removable patch, strap, battery holder. Thanks for all the tips guys!

I'm looking forward to the half case. I ordered it with the built in grip, and flush tripod screw. I decided on the hanging flap. I'm taking a trip next month so I am hoping it arrives before then.

I just received my Luigi case the afternoon (Friday in New York, Iordered it on Wednesday) it is beautiful! Smells wonderful! Fits like a glove! I love it!

Looks like a great set up! Why do you use the handstrap on the left side ? I would think you would put your hand thru it on the right(like a ski pole) and then hold the camera by the grip. When you buy the tripod screw ...it screws into the camera? Trade off is you have to unscrew it to open the back...do I understand this correctly? thanks Roger

 

I don't find that I need the security of the handstrap on the right. I use it more for carrying than in the shooting position.

I bought the "standard" M8 half case (without grip) + screw + strap. While buying from Luigi was an upbeat and friendly experience, while delivery was fast and while the products are obviously beautiful and of very high quality, I am uncomfortable with using them.

 

The half case is an extremely tight fit on the M8, much too tight in view of the fact that you need to slip it off completely to get to bottom plate (for card or battery): slipping the thing on and off is cumbersome and slow. requires sitting down and being methodical, not something you can do on the fly.

 

Also, the half-case has the hinged flap on the back. That feature was my main motivation for buying it, as it protects the fragile back elements (screen, scroll wheel, switches) from rubbing against the metal bits and pieces on my favourite jacket. It also allows nice natural no-chimp shooting while being very fast to unsnap when you need to access controls.

 

HOWEVER, with the tight fit of the case, the back actually weighs on the different switches, and the least little pressure on the back (bringing camera to eye or simply holding it), translates all too often into depressing one of the controls (generally the switches on the scroll wheel, sometimes a couple simultaneously, and also the "play" switch).

 

The "menu" switch seems to be "protected" by the scroll wheel and less likely to be depressed by pressure on the flap, but lies, like the "play" switch, really near the borderline between case and flap. Meaning you have to completely fit the case, screw included, to be sure those switches lie fully behind the flap, and not partly under the case itself, resulting in even more random depressions.

 

In other words, there is a high probability that you will be inducing "play" processes behind "closed doors" or trigger erratic processes that are not quite in line with the M8's so-so reputation for electronics robustness or even have controls staying depressed to the point of accelerating battery depletion. I am not comfortable knowing these things are happening randomly, even when the top switch is on the "off" position.

 

The "special screw" obviously screws in the body's tripod interface. And just as obviously means you have to unscrew it to take the case off, making the already cumbersome process even more of a headache. You need a coin or your house key to screw it on/off.

 

As much as I liked looking at the case, smelling it and fondling it, I decided now not to use it (and will put it for sale - it is black).

 

Not too sure about the strap yet - will give it a few more days, but already find the much uglier Upstrap to be the better choice.

 

I might get a Luigi half case for the M6 though, where the points above are of no consequence. But then the need for protection is not nearly as high either....

I just received a Luigi strap for my M8 today. It is a huge improvement on the standard one and like all Luigi's stuff, beautifully made. Luigi was not 100% sure that the viewfinder case would fit although he thought it should. As you can see from the image below it fits like it was made for it. I also got a cognac brown 12mm strap for my IIF, where I have been using an old Canon rangefinder strap for the last 20+ years.

Thank you for your counterpoints. I expected these tradeoffs when I purchased the half case with the grip. Since I will be using 2 M8s I plan to use one with the Leica grip and no case ..either the Leica strap or the Upstap(which is excellent ) and the 2nd M8 with Luigi s half case and his leather strap. I am not completely sold on the Leica grip as my trigger finger keeps smudging the small rangefinder window..so I am hoping Luigi s half case will provide a better gripping position. When I get the case I will report back on the trade offs.
