Hello,

I just received a Leica M3 from a moving neighbor, and the camera was given to me in a bag with a few accessories. There were 2 flash units, however, the connectors for the flash units do not have the right connections with the back of the M3. Is there an adapter that needs to be used? Also, I found a copper film canister with the Leitz trademarks on top, a metal winding stud, and a gold Z on the bottom. I assume this was a refillable canister, is there any way to get the film in it developed? I don't think walmart or cvs will know what to do with it.

The M3 has a non standard flash connector, which includes a spring system to hold the plug in, unfortunately it didn't catch on and even Leica dropped it. Adapters were available and I have one for my M3, and also an adapter lead with M3 plug on one end and a 3mm socket on the other.

A google search has not come up with any current source for these, so you could try your Leica dealer to see if he has any around the place. Its also possible to have the socket on the camera changed for a standard one as used on the current cameras.

Lucky you! You will have nothing but a wonderful experience with the camera. My own M3 still works wonderfully, with that indefinable Leica intimacy and feeling of connection with the camera. Yes, there are adaptors. The number of camera shops with a drawer full of bits and pieces is getting less and less, but the one that I know still has all sorts of such is Leo's Camera Supply in Vancouver Canada.

The film cassette is a good find, but processing requires knowing what type of film is loaded - so I wouldn't be concerned about it. These sell for a fair amount to collectors, or some of us that still load and process bulk film.

The flash adapters are also available from Don Goldberg - a trained 2nd-generation Leica repairman who now runs his own shop. If you are in the USA and need parts or service on the M3, I believe Don is better (and cheaper) than the Leica factory now. Look for DAG Camera on the Web and you can find his parts site listing the adapters.
