Yep, you and I are talking about the same remarks.

In your post at #1 and mine at #11 we are both talking about overly tight operation of the focus ring and yours has been fixed by DAG (and mine by Solms).

I was just trying to think of any reason why anyone would associate the fasteners for the bayonet flange with the focus operation problem you and I were talking about :D:confused:

Then shouldn't your points have been better directed at Steve, the guy who made the comment?

Oh well. Much confusion over small matter.

Being the least technically-minded person in the world, I can't begin to explain why this might be, but my 50 Summilux focusses a smoothly as the smoothest butter since it came back from Solms for calibration with my M9.

And let's hope it stays that way. Samples have been known to vary, and I can't explain it either.

If the bayonet flange was misaligned or loose or wrongly shimmed it might possibly affect focus accuracy but it has nothing to do with tightness or stickiness of operation of the focus ring

Not to worry. I'm pleased for you that you found someone who has got your lens working exactly as you want it.

Still, it is a fact on any Leica lens. If the flange is incorrectly tightened to the barrel, the resulting micro-deformation can affect the focusing.

Wow, I don't know why this thread has popped up again, but there is a fundamental misunderstanding going on that I didn't address at the time. It is not the torque (how tight) the bayonet flange is but that tightening it down properly centralises the flange, it is centralising the flange that can eliminate a sticky focus ring. The screws are countersunk on the flange and twisting the lens on and off can loosen them, when they become loose the flange can rotate a fraction and become offset but because of the countersunk holes it still appears to be tight. So you get a sticky focus ring that can appear very quickly unlike grease drying out.

I'm lucky to live close to Don and we've been friends for 35 years. He performed the same magic recently on my Noctilux. I wouldn't hesitate to send any Leica lens or M film camera to him for servicing. He does great work and is a really nice guy.
