helged Posted November 8, 2013 Share #521 Posted November 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will recheck in daylight tomorrow, but I did not see the reported silver rings with the available in-house light. I changed the inspection angle and I turned the focus ring. No silver ring to be seen... (the aperture at f2, of course). Ok - diffuse day-light in Norway uncovers three grayish, very (very) tiny rings, looking into the lens, and nothing like pajamies shows. The rings could very well have been black, which might be what the corrected lenses look like.
Advertisement Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Hi helged, Take a look here APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted November 8, 2013 Share #522 Posted November 8, 2013 May i ask you if the better definition of this lens wide open compared to its predecessor or summilux holds when the diaphragm is closed at 5.6 or 8 ? Could you compare ? It would be surprising if one can see more definition at f/5.6 or f/8, compared to the 50/1.4 asph for instance, save perhaps in the extreme corners. I have no experience with the 50/2 apo though.
biglou Posted November 8, 2013 Share #523 Posted November 8, 2013 I also don't know. Maybe it is quite impossible to figure that on digital cameras as the sensor will be the limiting factor.

The rings could very well have been black, which might be what the corrected lenses look like. I also see the 2 or 3 gray rings and then way down inside I see one thin silver ring which is very hard to see, but I do believe it is silver, but only the thin edge of it is visible to me. I have not sent this one in. I received it in July of this year while in Europe and getting it to Solms could be a real mess to deal with AFA customs is concerned since I am pretty sure Leica NJ would not want to get involved with this lens. Seems like we have very similar versions of the lens. I have contacted Leica/Solms, and I am advised to ship it via the Norw importer. Which means they will take care of the paper-stuff (Norw does not belong to the EU). I would perhaps think the same is the case for Leica NJ; although I see a potential conflict regarding the address of purchase.

Lou, I would ship it directly to Solms after you have contacted them via email and phone call. FedEx should be able to tell you the extra form you need to send in as the value is above a relevant number. Leica then will properly send it back so that you don't have to pay customs duty on reentry. Declare as item needing repair. Good luck.
platypus Posted November 9, 2013 Share #527 Posted November 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you can cope without it I would agree that it should be returned. 1. It may well flare and ruin your greatest photograph of all time . 2. Should you ever sell it in the future potential buyers will lkiely be aware of this issue and may well check the lens. regards, Mark Mark, thanks for your very sensible and well considered advice which, obviously I should heed..... however...... 1. I suspect that I have already taken that particular photograph! 2. I wont be selling this lens & when I fall off the perch someone else can worry about it. but really....thanks again, most sincerely. No, sorry! I cannot compare as I do not have either it's predecessor or the Summilux 1.4.
normcorriveau Posted November 12, 2013 Share #529 Posted November 12, 2013 Sent mine in today. I have a trip planned for the first week of February and I'm hoping it will be back by then. February 2014
erudolph Posted November 12, 2013 Share #530 Posted November 12, 2013 Sent mine in today. I have a trip planned for the first week of February and I'm hoping it will be back by then. February 2014 I sent mine October 1. Carmen of Leica USA checked with Solms on when they might be returning the lens and was told that "we are working on a solution." Other forum members, how would you interpret that?

Hey You Posted November 12, 2013 Share #532 Posted November 12, 2013 My dealer advised me not to return mine yet, hinting that the informal advice he had received was that the problem and the solution had not yet been identified definitively, because there appear to be variations between individual lenses. This despite the lens being built to tighter tolerances than any other Leica lens. I have a three-month trip scheduled for February to April 2014, and I would love to have my lens fixed beforehand. However, I will wait until my return and then decide what to do.
algrove Posted November 12, 2013 Share #533 Posted November 12, 2013 They don't know but will take care of the problem Seems not an easy repair.. It appears it was not easy to build them so disassemble and rebuild sounds like a nightmare.
marknorton Posted November 12, 2013 Share #534 Posted November 12, 2013 I don't know how many of these lenses they have produced - a few hundred would be my guess - but I think they should fix the problem and start again with new production. We don't know anything definite about what the problem is but if there's variation from lens to lens and the fix does not always work, it sounds like some tolerance issue. Who knows? Mine is in Solms at the moment and two other items sent in for service at the same time have been returned leaving the APO 50 behind.

pajamies Posted November 13, 2013 Author Share #537 Posted November 13, 2013 We had a sunny day on monday, tried out the 50/2 AA. Amazing sharpness. Central fogging I have not detected yet. Propensity for veiling seems to be higher than what I've experienced with Summilux 35/1.4 (new) or the WATE e.g. Here is a link to some pictures from monday. There is fog in the pictures, but it is real fog from he lake. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/j2gtu30y0xvlom4/YoQGNiJzTB Here is a link to the DNG:s / TIFF https://www.dropbox.com/sh/z2p2qr7xgxaa8gy/4X89gXv_4_

aesop Posted November 13, 2013 Share #539 Posted November 13, 2013 ...folks, I have trawled through this thread and picked up bits and pieces regarding this lens, but is there a particular post where all the specific issues (real or imagined) are captured?
