APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging

After having eventually discovered that also my APO Summicron suffers under certain circumstances of the infamous flaring issue (as recognized by Leica after examination of my files) I agreed yesterday to send the lens to Solms and I was advised that the turnaround period might be as long as four weeks.

After three months or so of casual but frequent use, in differing lighting situations, my APO 50 doesn't seem to have this problem, however, as I follow this thread, I can't stop (paranoidly) imagining that I must be missing something.

I wonder how many of these lenses there are out there that do not suffer from the dreaded flare fault. We seem to hear only about those that do.......

After having followed this thread I might be more interested in using the ZEISS 55/1.4 on my D800E or a FF NEX if the latter materializes.

Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon | BH inDepth

An interesting read, especially about flare control. Of course, I read this with a pinch of salt.

Now the question on my mind is how much variation is there for this lens from copy to copy? I guess, time will tell.

The good thing seems to be that in terms of optical excellence Leica might have some competition.

Of course, this lens is relatively bulky and is not rangefinder coupled, but with an adapter it could be used on a number of cameras, including an Leica M. :D

.... well you never hear of men having vasectomies .... unless it all goes horribly wrong.....

.... all you can conclude is that some lenses have problems ..... but how many 'some' is ... only Leica knows.....

APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging

My brand new APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH produces flare / fogging under circumstances that should not cause problems, eg overcast sky, without any direct sunlight present.

Shading the lens with the hand from above removes the fogging.

Diglloyd.com has observed the same phenomenon, and suggests that inadequate blackening of the lens interior may be the culprit. Looking into the lens one can see two silvery rings that could reflect light.

Below is a photo of the rings taken with my iPhone.

35 lux fle (11663) also has the same ring!

My lens is now back in Solms and this is what the work order says:

Sent to the Quality Control dept. for further examinations

adjust focusing ring

optics reflexes

adjustment of all parts

Not sure what "optics reflexes" means, I expect something is lost in the translation. In any event, I understand that lenses going back are being kept separate from normal service work and (I assume) are going back into the manufacturing QA process.

I am not the world's most experienced Leica shooter (nor the most novice) but I was not prepared to trust my judgment that my lens would never flare unexpectedly and I therefore prefer Leica to check it over.

In fact when I was advised that the turnaround might be as long as four weeks, the justification given was that the dept. in charge for this specific issue is the quality control dept.

So no flare at f/16 when shooting dark things against the light Mark?

I'm sorry, I had not picked this up as a way to reproduce the problem. When I heard Leica were accepting lenses for checking, I decided to let them do the work!

I think we can assume "optics reflexes" is more accurately translated as "optical reflections" or similar.
