wattsy Posted June 30, 2013 Share #21 Posted June 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) but rangefinders are rangefinders and i don't understand how they can be compared to the formers personally. Yes, agreed. Digital camera files are all much of a muchness nowadays but camera/user interfaces can differ markedly and a rangefinder with traditional shutter speed and aperture dials is a world away from something like a Nex or an EVF-only Fuji. For day to day photography I'd take a bog standard M8 over any kind of non-RF camera.
Advertisement Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Hi wattsy, Take a look here Good news from Fuji for us M lens users!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted June 30, 2013 Share #22 Posted June 30, 2013 Took me some time to wake up to the idea that i should put red filters on my lenses but i don't regret it now as the M8.2 is really a superb camera... with a nice coffee stain on the screen. Seriously it's become my favorite M since the M4... Ditto in my case - though I haven't had the coffee stain problem (yet?), and camera was my favourite since an M6. Returning to a rangefinder 7 or so years ago was a relief after several years of using an SLR.
bill Posted June 30, 2013 Share #23 Posted June 30, 2013 ... But where you irritate... Tsk. Since my stating my opinions irritates you so much, please feel free to use the ignore button. Me, I am just happy to live in a world unburdened by the nagging fear of a coffee stain on anything other than the tablecloth. Now with your permission shall we go back to the point of this thread? I am a huge fan of the rangefinder mode of seeing (my archivist can no doubt quote me saying so ten years ago). That is why I currently have three. But whilst I regard a crystal clear viewfinder as I enjoy on my M2 or MP4 as a joy to use I do not allow myself to be so blinkered as to not accept other solutions which do other things and do them better - SLR, EVF, etc Thus I did not go for the uncomfortable marriage of technologies in the X-Pro 1 but instead went for the pureplay X-E1. In my view that is the true successor to the Digilux 2, in handling and output, particularly when mated with Leica or Zeiss glass YMMV and that's fine. The point of this thread, lest we forget, was to give a heads up that - for free - Fuji are making a very good camera even better - free of charge - by giving it an enhancement that makes it even easier to use with legacy glass including Leica. I am fortunate to have backed a winner. Or I could have an M8 and flinch inwardly every time I reach for it, wondering if this is the day that it will let me down... I know which I prefer. But that's just my opinion Regards, Bill Sent from another Galaxy
Jeff S Posted June 30, 2013 Share #24 Posted June 30, 2013 You still fail to understand that I respect your opinion and your choice of camera...for you, just as I would anyone's choice. Why should I care what you deem an appropriate choice? That would be irrational, if not immature, to use your term. The issue I have is that when someone else made a comment about their choice, i.e., recommending an M8, your interjection was "Don't make me laugh" (with rolling eyes). Why should you care if that choice makes sense for someone else, let alone in a condescending tone? I think we live in great times for camera choice; something for everyone. It's a good thing. I have no vested interest in your choice. I just don't laugh at others' opinions, regardless of my own. My comments about the M8.2 (not the M8) are intended to show others my experience and opinion, not to suggest it's the right camera for them. Horses for courses. I've used at least a half dozen formats, and many camera brands, over the last 40 years, including up to 8x10. Whatever tool is needed for the task is my mantra. I like the M8.2, and that's why I comment on it regularly. I don't give a crap about coffee stains, and never think about it. I have 2 M8.2s that have performed flawlessly over the last 4 years. And if something is irreparable or causes it to fail, I have comprehensive insurance to get a new camera (which would be the the new M) without cost. But, for me, the M8.2 still isn't flawless. No camera is. I've had a wish list of improvements that I've posted over the years. It turns out that virtually all of these have been incorporated into the new M, including weather sealing, quieter shutter, longer battery life, Maestro processor and 2m frame lines (as with the M8.2). So once the teething issues are addressed (every digital M has had them), I'll test one extensively by making prints of my own pics and decide if it's the tool for me...or not. No rush, though, as my prints from the M8.2 are just fine, and a lot of that has to do with the workflow after the camera (software, printer, papers, inks, profiles, etc), which in my view are even more important than camera choice. These days there are tons of cameras that can produce good enough IQ; the rest comes down to personal preferences regarding various features and viewing experiences. To each his/her own. sfage Posted June 30, 2013 Share #25 Posted June 30, 2013 I tried a red filter upon my 5d2 once. It made the Bayer filter go crazy.
zlatkob Posted July 7, 2013 Share #26 Posted July 7, 2013 Isn’t that what Fuji did with the X100s? Yes, Fuji has implemented split image electronic focusing on the X100S, and it works well. However, I think that the focus peaking feature is even better. Using focus peaking, I've found I can easily & quickly focus the X100S in very low light. It is amazing. For now, Fuji only offers split image electronic focusing in the X100S, which does not accept other lenses. I think it is very likely they will implement the required hardware in an X-Pro1/XE-1 successor. Split image electronic focusing could not be added to the X-Pro1/XE-1 via firmware. eleskin Posted July 19, 2013 Author Share #27 Posted July 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well by next week, the update will be here and fuji is promising dramatic improvements in how the cameras will operate with the new firmware. I have to admit, Fuji has really made me happy with how they are maintaining the value of their cameras with all of these upgrades. For the money, they cannot be beat , and I am saying this as a Leica user since 1990! So in this order, Fuji and Leica are my favorite camera and lens makers. For the price, Fuji is my favorite hands down!
integrale Posted July 19, 2013 Share #28 Posted July 19, 2013 <snip> Split image electronic focusing could not be added to the X-Pro1/XE-1 via firmware. Do you know this for sure; and what do you think is the reason for this? I have recently purchased an X-E1 and so far I think Bill is right in saying that this is a worthy successor to the Digilux 2; especially when focus peeking is added on the 23rd. eleskin Posted July 19, 2013 Author Share #29 Posted July 19, 2013 Yes it is official with the upgrades. And to top it off, at a Fuji Event in Canada, it was announced that in an update this fall, focus peaking will have choice of colors, minimum shutter speed in auto ISO AND new lenses: 23mm f1.4 in October, 10-24mm in December, and a 56mm f1.2 in January 2014!!!!! Wow!!!!
eleskin Posted July 19, 2013 Author Share #30 Posted July 19, 2013 Here in the USA, I am seeing X-Pro 1's going for $1000 USD new. When you consider these fantastic updates, that is one hell of a value! Fuji is really committed to this X system and its customers! Bravo!!!
mjh Posted July 19, 2013 Share #31 Posted July 19, 2013 Do you know this for sure; and what do you think is the reason for this? The split-image focusing aid is based on the phase-detection pixels integrated on the sensor and neither the X-Pro1 nor the X-E1 have that sensor. bill Posted July 23, 2013 Share #32 Posted July 23, 2013 Damn... It's good. It's _very_ good. GXR good. Or better. This transforms the usability of the XE-1 with manual focus lenses... Regards, Bill Sent from another Galaxy
Stealth3kpl Posted July 24, 2013 Share #33 Posted July 24, 2013 new lenses: 23mm f1.4 in October 56mm f1.2 in January 2014 Looks like I'll be releasing a heck of a lot of Leica capital in a few months time. Pete
tobey bilek Posted July 26, 2013 Share #34 Posted July 26, 2013 Fiji cameras have a hot shoe. So what? Brightline finders is what.
eleskin Posted July 27, 2013 Author Share #35 Posted July 27, 2013 I am very impressed! It seems there was a bug in version 3.0 of the upgrade that corrupted video files. Fuji just responded by posting a new firmware update replacement within one day to correct the problem. An extremely fast response! I would like to hear other stories about other camera companies that respond so quickly! I can say this, for what you pay, Fuji certainly deserves a lot of respect on how they aim to please their customers! Really good value!
eleskin Posted July 27, 2013 Author Share #36 Posted July 27, 2013 I must say the focus peaking is extremely accurate! It is as if the screen is a giant micro prism from the slr film days! You have to get used to it , but when you see the highlight area it is in focus unlike the Sony where a broader area is highlighted and focus is missed! My Noctilux f1.0 is spot on at f1.0! I am very impressed!!!!
