I haven't posted on the XV thread for a while ....... so here is a selection .... some of which may have appeared elsewhere ........

Having looked through this thread again I have to say that the XV consistently produces images which are markedly better than any other selection of posts on the Leica forum ..... and particularly the macro and close up shots which are really superb....... :D

and a final one ...... I will have to dig out some more .....:p

Only one thing better than an XV in my opinion for consistently producing stunning images ........ my M with an Apo 50/2 ....... which makes the XV look an absolute bargain....

This is one TERRIFIC thread! Thank you all for posting your fantastic images, and for your valuable insight and information regarding the use of this camera.

My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I sent him a link to this thread :D

I am still thrilled with the X Vario - a walk-around camera that really replaces my DSLR for most situations.

Astronomers in action - taken with XV using red filtered Leica SF 240 flashgun (to avoid compromising astronomers' night vision); camera set to 'auto everything' and flash in TTL mode with lens at 18mm [28mm FF equivalent] (to ensure widest aperture selected). B&W preset film mode selected. Actual exposure settings chosen by camera were 1/30, f3.5, ISO 6400.

Surveying the night sky

Using the finder on the Dobsonian 'scope to line up the target

Observing the stars in not so good 'seeing' conditions … dew was a problem

Observer Mike using Dobsonian 'scope and Barry using my Zeiss Night Owl 7x45 B T* P* binocular. The Night Owl bino has a very wide field of view and has lead glass prisms - over 20 years old but can show Ultravids a thing or two - needs a tripod because lead glass weighs very heavy.

The XV with SF 240 used for nocturnal photography of astronomers in action in pitch black conditions is an ongoing project .The high ISO setting is pushing things a bit and I've obtained better results with ISO 3200 using the red flash technique … next time will use just two layers of red cellophane on the flash instead of four and try lower ISO settings. These are all taken as JPEGS. AF in pitch black is fine using AF assist … I used spot focus and shifted the spot focus rectangle over the white 'scope to give the camera something to 'grip on'. The wide focal length selected takes care of DOF … camera position was approx. 8 to 10 feet from the observers.

Best wishes
