Superb pics Keith! Did you use a tripod for the close-up of the flowers, or was it hand-held?

Thanks :) Hand-held. After all, the point of using an X-Vario (for me, that is) is to be as unencumbered as possible!

Sunday morning at Purton Church, Wiltshire. No complaints about the lens performance. Both hand-held. Imported into LR5, a little contrast added then exported/downsized for use here.

Bindweed image no. 2. Something of a gardener's nightmare - but prettier than Japanese knot-weed :0

My Raynox DCR-150 close-up lens arrived today - so of course I have had to try it out :) First image is the label on a jar of white beans (it was on the kitchen worktop and was the first potential subject to catch my eye). Second is a tiny flower with an even tinier wasp-type insect - so tiny I have cropped the image by about 50%. Third is something I saw in an overgrown part of the cemetery at a local church. Given that the DCR-150 is a supplementary lens, so far I am impressed with its capabilities.

But it's not a simple supplementary c/u lens … it's an achromatic triplet.

Does the Raynox lens as delivered require any additional adapter for the X Vario? Presumably it cannot be hooded against unwanted light rays?

Dunk, is there any noticeable degradation of optical performance when using the attachment?

David I have not yet used the Raynox M-150 (4.8 diopter) on the XV but plan to try some comparisons with a Leitz Elpro VIb (4.92 diopter) soon.

The Raynox M-150 has a 43mm male thread so screws straight into the XV 43mm filter thread - and the Raynox has a 49mm front filter thread so will accept an accessory hood.

The Raynox 'Universal Adaptor' (not shown in the above photo) has a 43mm thread but it is not required for use with the XV.

I will also try the Raynox with the X1.

Best wishes

The 49mm thread on the front of my new DCR-150 prompted me to raid my old gadget bags, unearth an Olympus OM2-n and rescue a collapsible rubber hood from the Zuiko 50mm f1.8. It came away complete with a skylight filter which I so far have been unable to separate from the hood. Anyway, hood plus filter fit the DCR-150 and the next time the sun shines, I will try it out.

David, a 'quick & dirty' comparison. Both are OoC .jpgs & 1/80sec hand-held. First image is with the DCR-150, second with the standard lens set at 70mm and closest focussing distance, then cropped for the same image size as image1. Both reduced to 900px & <300kb for uploading here. Two differences I see are the reduced contrast and (as expected) reduced DoF with the DCR-150. No doubt if one carried out tests with charts etc then there would be more differences, but (for my purposes) the DCR-150 is everything I had reasonably hoped for especially given its low price.
