Spectacular photograph. I imagine it must have been pretty spectacular just being there.

Thank you so much - it was one of those very few times when everything went even better than the best case scenario I had envisioned. I'm sure all of us here have slept in cars and in tents in the cold, gotten up to hike an unfamiliar place in the dark after much planning, and got skunked anyway. Makes it extra sweet when the stars align. This one will stick with me for a long time, I think.

R6, 50mm Summicron @f5,6 DoubleX 5222 in Xtol 1:1 @ISO 400

In the 90ies and early 2000, I shot a couple of music videos on this film. I loved B&W, but it was hard to acquire B&W jobs, so shooting on 5222 was a rare occurrence. Then digital came around, and film survived only at the mercy of a few selected projects. I started my recently revived journey with film using Ilford's Delta 400 because it's easy to buy and does everything one wants if a predictable outcome is crucial. But I always remembered 5222 fondly, so I started to look around. Double X is quite different from Delta. It has a steeper gamma, and skin tones tend to be a tad darker and contrasty, adding more personality. I remember it to be super sharp compared to the usual colour Vision stuff, and that holds true today.

Back then, I had rated 5222 often at IE 200, as I feared coarse grain (got burned once) and wanted a fat negative, especially when shooting indoors at lower light levels. But shooting at IE 250 and higher was good practice outside in the sun as the contrast was higher. With FF being a larger negative than S-35mm, I figured that IE 320/400 might work well, and it did.

Below are a few shots I took recently when winter returned for a few hours.

Well, now, I wake up in the morning and we have this… simply gorgeous. I love this image and it fits with my preferences of working with available  darkness and remarkably, this image has “soul”. 🙂
