WOw, this is my clear favorite of your recent photos from your P&S cameras.  It is painting :)

Portra 800 - Nikon L35 AW

Very lovely, Neil.  Not a blown highlight to be seen!  And I see that you have figured how to tame the highlight beast in your latest photos from your new Hassy digital; they are VERY nice

Family Portrait Ilford Delta on 4x5 Chamonix

Love these Steve.  I see you are gearing up for your African safari trip!  No better place to practice than the zoo at Central Park!

Central Park NYC Wildlife ..... these were taken with my R6.2, 80-200 Vario Lens with a 2XAPO extender ... Portra 400 shot at box speed ...

Comical - love it!

and another (BTW no idea what kind of bird that is except that it isn't a pigeon or a sparrow) ... here is some more ---

I'm really glad to see that the Natura worked out for you, Adam. You've made some wonderful pictures with it!

Pete.

Thanks again for turning me onto this, Pete.  I can't say it will be my bread and butter, but I did order a bunch more rolls.  It is much grainier than portra but much faster and the native extra speed is unique among the color film stocks.

Steve - ok, please let me tell you something straight.  Take that Q of yours and throw it in the nearest rubbish bin.  Do me a favor.  I suspect you are sharing a lab scan as I sense the heavy contrast.  This is an edgy look that is VERY cool.  But I am 1000% sure that a proper scan would give you infinite additional latitude in terms of how to portray this lovely model.   You could get much more shadow detail in her shirt, less dominant highlights in her face and a gentler overall contrast level, which would make her look more delicate and lady like.  Having said this, your lab scans provide a very cool, edgy contrasty look that most people would actually prefer.  I'm just saying....there's a lot to play with.

Now, to the skin tones.  With all due respect to you and your bank account, your Q photos put this lovely lady's pimply skin under a NASA microscope (or is it a telescope :) ).  I can count them from the comfort of my home with my glasses off.  It is too clinical and in order for it to work for me this lady needs a wedding cake worth of skin foundation.  With the portra, without even trying to tame the contrast to achieve a more gentle and natural skin tone, her face is much more natural looking and smooth.

Of course, the gorilla in the closet is the focal length.  The 28 is not really well suited for a proper portrait.  And your 50mm just kills it.

have a some Q shots in the people section, not much response over there, here are a couple taken with portra 400 -- the Q is great, files were equal to the SL I used at the Leica Akademie, maybe better, but film ..... to me, best ....

The lab scan has plenty of latitude, here is a somewhat different version of one of the shots, and with CaptureOne, and film, I am do a lot more. There is nothing wrong the scan, I prefer what I posted and my point is really that out of the camera I like the shot better. The Q required some work in PP to get the shot I wanted, and even then there are ways of smoothing skin blemishes out, etc, etc,etc  The be fair, the photographer leading the class was teaching us about focus, not in focus, over exposed, all in the name of conveying the emotion rather than simply the technically best picture. More to the point you are making, he does his "pp" in effect in the camera (temp, exposure, etc) so that what pops out is what he wants -- get it right in the camera ... anyway the Q takes great movies and is very useful when the lets get low ...
