Thank you so much Klaus, and I completely agree with you about the metaphysical unease inherent in the picture. I'd always overlooked this picture but when I saw it yesterday it immediately brought to mind the posters that I used to see around that featured a monkey in a medical situation. The monkey in the poster had a very similar expression to the one in my picture and the poster was captioned "Abolish Vivisection".
