So - and this is a true story - I have this time machine and set it earlier today for Melbourne in 1979. Clearly I hadn't remembered how weird it was. Vampires in the streets, you name it. Crazy days. I was disappointed to find out that the Love Bites that were being given out by Drac's assistants were just some baked fruity snack thing. Bummer. Though I got the impression the vampire had other ideas, so I quickly scrambled back to whatever year it is now.

The Noctilux you get when you can't find/afford the Leica version: 1970s version of the Nikkor 50 1.2.

Phil, time travel usually holds a surprise, even if it takes place in one's own photo archive. And yes, I absolutely agree with you: the vampire obviously had other ideas... Nice idea and a beautiful photographic facet of a bygone (advertising) era.

wonderful, John. For a near-Leica price, there's also the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 that I think also gives wonderful interpretations.

Thanks.  Yes, there is a 58mm Nokt Nikkor that has a superb reputation but much harder to find than the 50 or 55 versions and with a price closer to Leica than the 50 or 55, either of which can be found in good condition for around 1/10th the price of the Leica.  Lovely on the film cameras they were designed for, also work extremely well on the Leica SL, which makes the focus shift from f/1.2 to 5.6 more visible than on film that seems rather more forgiving.  I had the Voigtlander-M 50 1.1 for a while but find I prefer the rendering of the Nikkors when chasing that wide-open look.  For use on a rangefinder the Summilux-M 50 ASPH is rather better than the Voigtlander as it does not seem to have any noticeable focus shift whereas finding the sharpest focus point with the Voigtlander was somewhat hit and miss.
