A series of unfortunate events led to three rolls of film from my recent trip to the United States being lost, possibly (probably) permanently.

I'd decided to get the first lot of films I'd taken on our trip developed locally so that I wouldn't have to worry about x-rays at the couple of airport security checkpoints I'd be passing, so August 1 I took them to a lab in Seattle which had been recommended to me. After some time, when I was back in Australia, I ended up ringing the lab a few times (they weren't responding to emails) and was told that they'd recently moved address and that things were taking a couple of weeks longer than normal. Anyway, long story short, eventually I received the low-resolution scans I'd asked for via email and, some time after that (after I rang them again and asked a local friend to pay them for postage) they posted them to me. That was September 9.

Then Australia Post for some reason delivered them to a post office in a town 20km down the road instead of my town. I went there but that post office told me that they'd been mis-sorted and for some inexplicable (to me) reason they'd been sent to Perth, Western Australia which is some 3,500km from where I live. That was early October and no-one seems to have any idea (or care) where the hell they are (except me of course). So I do apologize because any of these photos that I do post will be from just the low-resolution scans.

My apologies for the rant. It's enough to convince you to go digital.

Just kidding (about the digital thing - the rest is all too true). I think I'll just take my chances with x-rays in future. 😖

I take 400 ISO film (especially Tri-X) through airports all the time, and have for years.  Last month I took a half dozen rolls of Tri-X to Europe and brought them back through two airports in the US, and experienced no problems or degradation at all.  (Carry-on, of course.). I have even stopped asking to have my film hand-checked because I hate the hassle and haven't found the need so far.

So very sorry, Phil. What a frustration! You did everything right, and everything wrong happened.

Very much like this. The plain of those windows really powerfully pull all the shapes together. It seems organic. Great composition and it was a terrific artistic move to do it low-res and give it that slightly dreamy look. 🙂

That's encouraging. There's a massive thread somewhere on Photrio about which airports use which scanners.

I never take film through a scanner since I can't be 100% confident in either direction, whether I'm shooting good film or whether the shots I've taken will be okay. But last year, I forgot to take film out of my camera in San Francisco and developed it when I got home and it was fine.

I was in Seattle in August, we could have met for beer! What happened really sucks! I flew back to Italy with a lot of rolls, both exposed and unexposed. I thought about using some local labs for color, but then I decided to develop them here by myself. I had to ask for a hand check twice, in Seattle and in NY, but they were ok with that. They didn't check each single roll because I kept the boxes and wrapped them together like they were unopened. Basically, I had a few bricks and a few single spare ones. The trick worked well, for this time. I have to say that travelling with like 60 rolls, a few cameras and 2 kids to take care of is not fun.

I can thoroughly understand your frustration. It probably adds to the frustration of all those films that you lost when

- you developed them with expired developer

- you opened the developing tank too early

- you accidentally opened the back of your camera with the film still in

- you shot a whole roll only to notice afterwards that the film wasn’t transporting ( usually when you are at frame 40)

- you noticed the light leaks that indicate that your camera needs a service

- …

😁

(You’ll notice I’m experienced in this …)

Hmmmm. Yes, each one of those gets a tick. I'm perversely glad I'm not the only one, Christoph!

Yes I think you're right, hydet. Unfortunately I broke a rule I never break, which is to listen to internet wisdom, and at the time there was a lot of FUD about the new generation scanners. To add to it, I had my Domke lead-lined bag with me plus both airports I subsequently went through hand inspected the few rolls I had with me without question. Another reason I'd wanted film developed in Seattle was that one of the rolls contained pictures of our son and daughter-in-law's re-wedding which they staged for us as we'd been unable to get to their actual wedding due to covid restrictions, and I'd have liked to have shown them those before we left (I took the completed rolls I had to that point to the lab ten days before we were due to leave, thinking that would give them plenty of time). Also there was/maybe is a roll of precious Adox Mission which I'd generously been gifted by Rog when we caught up with he and his wife in Long Beach.

Thanks so much Ken. I appreciate your thoughts on my picture and, who knows, the films may still magically appear.

That really is good to know. I have the Domke lead-lined bag, too, for insurance, which I'll just use in future for the few rolls I'll take from home. The rest I'll buy overseas and take my chances with any exposed/undeveloped film on my way home again.

Damn! I'd have loved to have caught up with you Antonio! I like your trick with bundling up the rolls but... 60 rolls! 😱 Maybe sometime in the future our paths will cross in Seattle or wherever and if so the first round is on me!

That's a wonderful inside/outside picture Klaus. Is that Cologne?

Thank you, Phil. Yes, that's Cologne--the cathedral seen from the "wrong side" .  It is locally called "schäl sick", which may be roughly translated as the queer or wrong side because: in  medieval times prostitution, alcohol, gambling etc was banned on the left bank, but allowed on the right bank of the river. ( Those bishops knew a thing or two about life !)  Since then it is called the queer side... but you have a nice view as you see.

Thank you for that interesting history, Klaus. Knowing that helps me a lot, looking at the picture and thinking about the architecture. The leading bridge helps immeasurably, too, both aesthetically and maybe also with the historical perception, as I'd imagine it's a railway bridge perhaps ending in rail yards ie also the "wrong" side of town.

Low-res, high-res, shadow-res, looking very atomic high-rem, it's all evidential ART. The BRIGHT WHITE! Don't look at the flash. TOO LATE. You looked. You duck and cover. Tell me it's COR-TEN safe. Sir Laurence Olivier wants to know, Marathon Man. I'm getting my vintage Gamma Radiation tester online, Army Vintage, no questions asked, just keeping it all low-res. Phil, you are a genius. Splatter navigation, I'm going low-res implosion. Please, please, Phil, more low-res around-the-world grain.

Awesome, Wayne! To me it looks like a frame from an old classic black and white movie!

Thank you. With ample sunlight, and low enough ISO, Verichrome Pan seems almost impervious to time. Shot at same ISO, but in more shaded areas, the results were not so good.

Best,

Wayne

I’m hoping to tap into the expertise here, I recently bought a bulk film loader full of film, it had been opened and the first couple of feet were ruined but after that while the edge is fogged the image area is clear. Does anyone recognize these edge markings? They are all I have been able to find on the first 4 feet of film.
