philipus Posted August 15, 2016 Share #19926 Posted August 15, 2016 Thank you for the kind comment on my photo, Kevin. Btw, what kind of research did you do in China? The last photo of the pipe smoking man is particularly nice and atmospheric. Incidentally, perhaps we need, here among the filmerati, a pipe smokers' nook, akin to of the Wittertainees. The last photo of the pipe smoking man is particularly nice and atmospheric. Incidentally, perhaps we need, here among the filmerati, a pipe smokers' nook, akin to of the Wittertainees. Philip, I'm a professor of modern Chinese history. My research is on Chiang Kaishek's Nationalist regime during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-45). Chongqing (Chungking in contemporary English sources) was the temporary capital after 1939, so many of the records for this period are still in the Chongqing Municipal Archives. Huge, vast oceans of documents, most never seen by anyone except the people who wrote them, received them, and filed them. The trip in 2014 was to use the Chongqing Municipal Library, however, because it has an enormous collection of printed materials (the Roosevelt Library is housed there). It was closed (to move into a brand new building) when I did my major archival work in 2006-07. So I had to go back. Managed to cram in a nice jaunt to Emeishan (Mt. Emei) and Chengdu with a good friend. Photos are from that mini-trip.
