Africa's largest and most iconic carnivore is now highly endangered. Lion numbers have decreased by over 90% in the last 40 years.

We're down from a population of +350, 000 to no more than 25, 000 left in the wild today.

Thanks for viewing.

Mike -

Wonderful shots, as usual. I'm often amused to see how the big cats share so many behaviors with house cats.

Are they bing hunted? Is the problem also habitat encroachment?

Stuart- Yes sadly all of the above as well as poaching for lion body parts.

For example, as tigers are now on the verge of extinction, and tiger bones and penises (which according to Chinese traditional medicine are supposed to increase sex drive) have become more difficult to acquire, lion body parts are now considered a good substitute.
