Presumably RRS has some idea! Why not contact them personally? Everything we report here is second hand of course.

I pre-ordered. Currently if it takes weeks it will stilll be delivered before my camera that I ordered last November :(

I have been very fortunate to have loaned to me an M type 240 by my dealer Camera Electronic in Perth. While it is, it seems something of an anathema to use a tripod with a Leica M for many, it is necessary for much of my work and to my great delight the Really Right Stuff's MC-L universal L bar fits the new M perfectly. While I think the new grip / plate / L bar is a wonderful and a down right clever design it might be a bit of over kill for me.

I have used several L bars over the years and IMHO all RSS products are superb performers.

The main advantage is speed. Otherwise the universal plate is virtually the same. Im currently using the universal plate, but will happily switch once my pre-order arrives.

I use QR plates all the time. About 15 years ago, when the choice of QR plates was much narrower, I plumped for the slightly clunky sized but very secure and quick to use, Manfrotto 200PL system. Now 15 years later, all my various size tripods, heads, arms, brackets and monopods all use this system, so it would be a major investment to change now. If I was starting from scratch now, I would probably go for either the Kirk or Arca system.

The RRS does look like a reasonable solution but it suffers from the same issue as all plate systems do on the M240. Unlike the M8 and M9, where you could quickly switch between base plates, one with a QR plate on and one without and it was very quick and easy to remove the base plate to access the SD card and/or battery, you now have to unscrew the QR plate, before you can remove either of the foregoing. I understand why Leica did this in order to have a far more robust tripod thread, where the load was transmitted direct to the camera body not via the rather weak base plate latch. However it really makes you question the whole base plate ethos. Should the base plate just have covered one third of the base and been able to be opened with a QR plate or tripod in position? Should the battery and SD card have had access doors somewhere else all together?

All I know is that the current set up is inconvenient for QR plate and tripod users. WiFi Cards are too slow for current practical use with DNG images. Things may get better for me, when the MF grip finally arrives, depending on how well tethering is implemented and how long it takes for an iPad tethering App to be developed. However, at the moment, I constantly have broken nails from trying to pick up the very stiff Manfrotto locking rings on the QR plates to access the SD card.

RRS says they will start shipping soon, "as early as this week".

Now if I just had a camera to go with it, and the other stuff I have accumulated for it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I received my RRS QR plate and L attachment today here in Australia. I still have no camera and no indication when more cameras may arrive in this country.

The base plate includes several details of which I was not aware. This may be useful to others.

There is a rubber gasket over most of the left half internally. The instructions note that there is a magnet embedded underneath and that is confirmed by its magic attraction powers. I guess that is to do with a base present signal for the camera instead of the protrusion inside the M9 plate?

There is a series of holes over the SDHC card position (for wifi?); internally they are covered by the gasket too.

As expected the overall dimensions are almost identical, although the new plate is actually a little shorter left to right due to a neater profile where the optional items are fitted.

I am not a fan of their grip design as it seems overly bulky and also too smooth for me. I did not buy this for my M9 nor for the M typ 240 so that is just my preference, not experience. I personally would prefer something like theshape of the grip post on the original accessories. I don't think the originals are available as yet though. Since there are three attachment threads at each end I had guessed that I might be able to fit the L to the grip end with the intent of putting the viewfinder at the top when in portrait position on a tripod. That would make access much easier for left eyed shooters. RRS never had said that would be possible. This was just my guess and it was wrong, sadly ;-) . The thread positions do not align (on my sample at least). That may have been intentional in the design of course.

There were no rubber blanking plugs provided for the (six this time) bolt positions, unlike with the M9 delivery. However the grip end holes are covered internally by the gasket and it is possible to fit the supplied bolts for the L attachment without the item itself. In that instance they do not protrude into the internal space. Having said that the new attachment is carefully contoured and unobtrusive and the top is completely cut away for lug clearance in any case. My impression is that it will not compromise a normal hold on the camera at all.

The attaching bolt for the camera's tripod socket is not actually captive and there are no seals/gasket present. Fastened properly it should seal as well as any tripod thread of course. The winged handle is very neat and can freely rotate whether folded flush or extended. There are two external tripod threads (one each end) for tripod mounting without the RRS QR clamp. Those are blind holes and so do not compromise sealing.

So now I have the RRS accessories, the Olympus VF2 EVF from eBay, even a new Softie from Tom Abrahamsson and my dealer has had a deposit for my camera for months. A delivery would be nice any time now thanks Leica Camera Australia!

Hoppman has well described the RRS plate. My suggestion on the grip is get some Griptac and cover the grip with it. I did this on my M9 grip (actually had Cameraleather do it) and it makes a world of difference. I have suggested to RRS that they make the grip available with some kind of nonslip covering because it is too smooth. My suggestion was well received by the person with whom I emailed but I have no idea if they will implement the idea.

By the way I too have my grip, my soft release, etc but no camera but today I was told it is on its way and I will have it in a few days.

Excellent description. Here is an image attached to body, surprisingly the weight difference is not even noticeable.

Could someone measure the additional depth that the RRS plate adds compared to the factory M240 baseplate?

I received a RRS plate, but have not received my M yet. I am researching if Luigi will modify his half case to accommodate the RRS plate and I need to communicate the additional depth. The additional depth appears to be approximately 6/32", but I would appreciate someone who can mount both the factory plate and the RSS plate on a M240 to capture the accurate difference in metric.

I don't have my M typ 240 as yet although I have the RRS plate. I will be happy to measure the overall height difference for you when the camera arrives soon I hope).

EDIT:

I just realised that you have the RRS plate already so you didn't need me to describe the shape differences.......

You just want a total height difference of the body with each item fitted I think?

However if you plan to carry the camera with the Luigi half case fitted much of the time, why not just use the standard plate then and only fit the RRS unit when you want to use with a QR clamp on a tripod?

To change the SDHC card and /or the battery you would have to unfasten the half case and then unscrew the bolt in the RRS plate as well. The redesign to accommodate the new tripod socket means that you cannot just unlatch the RRS plate like the standard item as with the M8/9.

I just plan to use the RRS plate all the time and not carry both. For those times when I need to use a tripod, I would remove the half case. The leather half case with the small bump appears to provide the "grip" I am looking for.

Yes I am looking for the additional depth the RRS plate adds compared to the factory base plate when they are both attached. I also don't have the most accurate metric measuring devise.

Additional Height is approx. 8mm

Depth, maybe 1mm-1.5mm.

I received mine with grip yesterday. Living in the same state, when ordered UPS Ground (regular), it typically arrives the next day due to team efficiency (not UPS's for God's sake).

Regarding weather seal, which was assailed in a previous post. It has some sort of rubber like gasket going over half the inside (hard to describe). When screwed into the tripod mounting plate, my visceral feeling is that this is a tighter, better seal. (Not about to go out and douse it in a shower and measure water leakage no matter who asks.)

Thanks God I finally have something to hold onto until the bloody GPS grips become available. Said while removing the beautiful RRS plate, placing on original and driving to UPS to send it to NJ for the bloody lug thing.

What is the function of the plate on the RHS of the grip looking from the front of the camera? My only negative comment on what looks like a very nicely made bit of kit is that the tripod threads are now very far displaced from the central point of the camera (shades of my old LTM cameras).
