Third Party Epson inks

I still use an Epson Stylus Photo R800 for printing and jolly good prints it produces too, but inks are getting prohibitive cost.

Now the machine is several years out of warranty, I am looking for third party inks to cut costs SO LONG AS THE QUALITY AND LONGEVITY are good.

 

Which third party inks should I be looking at. I have seen Photospeed systems but want to look widely before committing.

Are you printing colour or just monochrome?

 

Permajet have been around for a long time and seem to provide a full service.

As a friend of mine had a good experience with InkJetCarts, I switched a couple of weeks ago from Epson dye inks to their dye inks for my Stylus Photo R300.

 

On the plus side:

- very fast shipment

- complete starter kit (6 bottle of inks, 6 refillable cartridges and 6 syringes for $42)

- cartridge refilling is very easy

- each bottle contains the equivalent of 10 Epson cartridges

 

On the minus side:

as the inks are not fully identical to their Epson counterparts, I had to create a new printer profile.

With the new profile, no problems.

 

So, as long as you are prepared (or have the opportunity) to create a new printer profile, this is a good solution to save substantial money.

 

At a later stage, I will try their Ultrachrome inks.

Interesting... So did the ABW driver work without a profile update as this is controlled but the printer?

 

If you use K3 inks I'm assuming that the profiles would be fine?

 

I've never used anything other than epson inks so no idea of the results...

I have always used pigment inks and usually print just colour but with 8 cartridges it gets expensive - although I do not use the gloss optimizer any more.

I borrowed the SpyderSTUDIO from a friend of mine and used SpyderPRINT.

Might not the the top of the range but worked out well in my case.

ColorMunki is an other option.

You may also search this forum for "printer profiling" to benefit from others' experience.

I use Datacolor's Spyder Express to calibrate my screen and have been looking at the SPYDERPRINT device for my printer.

Does anyone have any views on that device?

I know there are very costly devices, but being an "occasional" amateur (and a pensioner) I need something which is economically viable.

I am just starting with inkowls version of K3 inks for my 4800.

My biggest problem is the image prints phatte black.

IP and I are in a battle over the upgrade of my software. Technically they are correct, and it's full price for me to update, long story, but I bought it didn't work properly, ended up with new machine which I needed for all to work correctly. But imageprint is holding me to purchase date.

 

So I'm going to try to make a few profiles with the colormunki photo.

If it doesn't work ill still have an old version of IP.

At least this way ill be able to try different ink sets. I believed epson when they said 100 yrs.

now many say only 20.

 

I've read good stuff about cone and actually many swear by epsons driver.

 

I too will be following and hope to see what you all decide on.
