Leica M Handgrip availability

I'm wondering if anyone has coded their existing R adapter to bring up the menu of lenses. The adapter is as Wilson says entirely mechanical but the lens code does activate new firmware functions and I'm wondering if they are tweaking - or even still writing - this firmware. Do we know for sure if any image corrections are applied with any of the 20 "supported" lenses?

Mark,

I have two coded (110111) adapters, a Contax CX/Y to M and a Visoflex replacement adapter (41mm M to M extension tube), on both of which I arranged, with considerable difficulty, that they brought up the 28/90 framelines.

They certainly activate the R lens menu and the lens data appears on the EXIF. Slightly oddly in one case. I have declared my Zeiss 28-85/f3.3 Vario Sonnar as a Vario-Elmarit-R 28-90/f2.8. This shows up as a 28mm lens on the EXIF. I am not convinced that any correction is being applied. Chris Tribble may well be the person to answer this, as I think like me he has an Adriano Lolli adapter which can be coded and has wider R lenses.

Obviously in that I am using the Visoflex adapter with longer lenses, I would not expect any correction to be applied but again the EXIF shows the correct selected R lens equivalent e.g 280/f4.8 Telyt-V selected at 280/4 Telyt-R shows up as 280mm lens.

Actually Jono is the guy to talk to about this. He mentioned to me many months ago the Leica R-M adapter that he was using did the same on Vario lenses and pegged his 28-90 at 28mm whenever he used it if I recall. I do believe it's only for lens ID if this is the case.

Jono can you verify if my memory serves me well?

I wonder if the handgrip has not shown up yet because it opens up it's computer operation.

As far as I know the camera will tether with Leica Shuttle (?) so I would imagine all sorts of complications and bug squashing going on there.

  • 1 month later...

Had an MF grip on my M today and I was immediately impressed with how light it is when compared to my RRS QR L and hand grip. Admittedly this one was a dummy in that no GPS was inside, but even at that it will weigh just a few grams more when complete.

I forgot how nice the end of the grip was shaped as it does not block the famous LV button at all. Perhaps I can get by without a Thumbs Up with this MF grip. We will see.

Now to the base. It screws into the M tripod hole and puts another tripod socket way to the right side. As I want QR capability I noticed that the RRS 6" QR plate with adjustable screw point will wok on the MF and when needing to change battery or SD card you can leave the QR plate screwed into the MF and just use the finger/thumb screw on the MF grip to remove both simultaneously.

Told by multiple sources that September is when they will ship. Let's see if MF grips come out before the one year anniversary of the M.

What happened to this announcement from Leica?

Leica has released information this week providing an update as to the status of accessories for the Leica M (Typ 240). The accessories and their estimated ship dates are below:

Algrove,

Did you have a chance to ask Leica about the R to M adapter and an explanation for the delay in this very simple piece of equipment.

Officially they will give no date in Solms (Stephen Daniels included), but Leica Munich store said they were told September with no more delays. We shall see. Lou

It's coming up to a year since it was first announced, about 1 month away. I wonder what the gestation period for elephants is, especially those of the white variety?

It really is a disgrace that Leica can show product at Photokina, have it working during the beta testing of the camera and still not make it available.

Mark,

Was the GPS working at the beta testing phase? I have a feeling it was not. Perhaps if Chris or Jono are reading this thread, they can let us know. My guess is that is where the problem lies and I would not be surprised if it was battery consumption related. If you are to have a system which can immediately attach a location to a shot, it cannot wait to acquire satellites after switch on but must be regularly updating. That all takes power.

On the MF grip front, does anyone know how or if it will couple to an SF-58D flash. I know it has an SCA output but even though the SF-58 is made by Metz, it does not have an SCA type shoe/module like the outwardly very similar MZ58-AF2. I want to be able to use a flash while using the EVF-2 finder.

Lou,

Many thanks for that update. Last point - did Leica say anything about the also very overdue firmware update.

Actually, the GPS was working during the beta testing. The GPS tagging was working fine on Jono's photos. It did drain the battery faster, of course.

A SF 24 D seems to work, a SF 58 certainly works too.

Wilson-Jono's GPS was working as I remember seeing his image readings in CH during the Winter.

No comment on when, but they were very interested in all my camera settings when I get the dreaded lockup. From that I assume they will figure it out in the next or the FW upgrade after this next one AFA lockups are concerned.
