M (240) freezes up and exposure issues

I took out the battery several times to reset with no success. I updated the firmware. It worked again for 2 days after leaving the battery out overnight but then again, reverted to "0.0" with no metering available. Thanks for your response. I'm hoping it is a simple fix. Leica repair had no other suggestions other than for me to send the camera to them to look at.

I am experiencing occasional freeze ups and shots that are totally under or overexposed. This occurs at least once a day. The camera will freeze up and the shutter won't fire for 4-5 seconds, once I had to pull the battery to reset. The over exposures are also random. I havent been able to identify a pattern yet of what is causing this, I'll try to take notes of my settings. Is anyone else experiencing this?

When I bought my first Leica M 240, it was behaving in a similar way.  Sent returned it, and the replacement has not had that sort of problem.

Had my first experience last night when one of my wife's students was doing big Hindemith solo!!!!!

Use San Disk and format in camera.  Have had M for three years now and over 10,000 shots and first occurrence.

Did use LV to confirm focus for 90 Elmarit and glad to have the tool.  Not happy to have camera lockup at worst time.

Thanks to this forum when on/off didn't work twice, then pulled battery and viola!

Luckily fixed in time to land some winners so my thanks again to this forum--just invaluable.

I had an extreme version of the freezing problem. I sent the camera to NJ. No word on it as yet. This is how I described the problem for Leica:

Description of Problem:

  • My camera suffers from periodic freezing, meaning that the camera ceases operation (the shutter will not actuate, the control buttons on the back of the camera do not work, no photos may be taken or viewed)
  • The freezing problem is intermittent. It varies in how long it takes to happen. Sometimes it will take one picture then freeze, a dozen, or even 60 or more, but freezing does inevitably occur.
  • Other solutions I have tried, without success:
    • Taking out and reinserting the battery,
    • Trying a different battery,
    • Turning off the camera and then restarting,
    • Trying different SD cards,
    • Reformatting the SD cards in the camera,
    • Reformatting the SD cards on my computer with the SD Formatter software,
    • Resetting the camera,
    • Reinstalling the latest firmware

If, after freezing, the camera is left alone for a while, it will begin to work again for a period of time that is unpredictable, sometimes one picture, sometimes more. Freezing always recurs

Please keep us posted on what Leica NJ has to say & propose to do about this problem, along with any cost estimates to fix it.  I bought a lightly used M-240 about 4 weeks ago & started out having very similar problems with it.  But I read on this site about the SD card formatting problems. And since I was using a couple of SanDisk 95MB/s cards previously used on my Fuji X-Pro1, I thought that former in-camera formatting was maybe not being totally erased.  So I first got SDFormatter & that seemed to work.  Then I got two new SanDisk 95MB/s cards & have been using only them.  So far no more problems, but I am very concerned it will re-occur at any time.

Well, I have my camera back from Leica NJ, where it was sent for repair of the freezing issues noted above. So far, it works, but I need to take it out for a long day of shooting to see how it does. There was no paperwork to indicate what they did to it (which seems a bit odd). I'll let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed!

Good luck as I know from my experience with this freezing issue, it can be very disconcerting when you are not certain that the last frame taken may well be just that for a while.  Also I would expect that you could call the service folks in NJ with your repair order info & get a verbal report on what was done to it - unless of course you may want the peace of mind of not knowing as long as it keeps on working.

Well, I'm very sorry to say that after only three, yes THREE, pictures, my camera froze again. This time it has stayed frozen. As noted above, this is after having the camera in to Leica NJ to be 'fixed'. I am speechless and beyond words. I am incredibly frustrated, but most of all, saddened by this --- when the camera was working, I loved it as I have no other camera, but at this price point, simple reliability has to be a given! It was the answer to my photographic dreams. I have been researching what lens to get next, and was very recently very close to buying a new Monochrome and 50 APO! No longer! Obviously, it will have to go back for them to try again, but I am pretty despondent about it ever working properly, or me having confidence in it again.

I truly think I have a lemon. For a company with the brand and reputation of Leica to have cameras freezing, and not to be able to fix it, is to me shocking. Although I have spilled a lot of words on it, I am shocked by it.

Its bad enough that I have a nonfunctional and very expensive camera, but now Leica has to contend with me speaking ill of Leica until it is fixed.

I had similar problems with two M240 (first one was stolen). Approx a freeze every 50-100 pictures. After I tried everything (new FW, new SD-Card, SD formatter etc.) I send the body to Leica, but they found nothing. After a while I send it a second time and they changed the board. Now the freezes are gone.

I shot a roll of Tri-X on my MP today. There was no issues with my camera as it runs smooooth. Just wanted to cheer op the M 240 owners :)

Last week I just shot a roll with my MP and the Tmax 400 film screeched and rolled very difficult...First roll with which that happened.

At the same time my M240 got stuck two times. One time during photographing , one time while I made a "greycard shot" The photo went black. . Pulled out the battery and started again. Still, this was two times in about 500 frames.

Was it a "old" M240 or a recent one? Could it be , that the newer ones lock up less?

MateoVC - Before sending it back to Leica NJ you might want to try calling them to see if this board change was done to your camera, & if not, get them to commit to doing it before you send it back again.  Good luck with it as that has got to be terribly frustrating.  I'm so sorry you are having this problem & hope that one more try will get it resolved.  My best wishes.

First one was from May2013 and the second one from June 2014. So both not very new... I learned that there were different types of freezes, and Leica fixes some if these problems with FW updates, but otheres have hardware reasons. But I hadn't understand why some people had freezes and some not. It might be a question of details in the usage (EVF, LV, ...).

Yes, I had freezes during photo making , giving a " black " photo and freezes after photo making, delivering the photo but not able to make another.

Update: I have my camera back from NJ and it seems to be working fine. I think they replaced all the electronics. The very nice people at the Leica dealer here in Toronto, Downtown Camera, loaned me a M240 and 50 lux for a trip to Paris. Much appreciated!

My M-P(240) produces between 5 and 10% 'drastically' overexposed shots.  Typical is right after the camera has been resting for a while.  Then the first shot is almost white.

I have not experienced that the camera is freezing up.  But it is notoriously slow in standard mode.

With my M-P I have experienced the same white/overexposed files. Mainly pulling the camera from the bag and snapping a picture on the way out, then showing it the light. 20 second exposure then 30 second correction to reset the sensor. Or just a shot with the cap on, then removed. Same effect. Still it is 45 seconds lost. I feel this is my/user error on my part.

Yes I know. No bags. No caps. Always be ready.
