carcam Posted March 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know this question is wide open...I'm picking up a new car in Germany the end of June and will drive around Germany, Switzerland, northern Italy, southern France, etc. for 2-3 weeks. I have never been to this part of the world before and am overwhelmed by the travel guides/books. I would also like to give a workout to my M8. Are there any special places that I shouldn't miss? Thanks.

luigi bertolotti Posted March 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2007 Northern Italy (where I live) is full of fine picture sites: what do you prefer ? Towns, Mountain paysage, small villages, people, lakesides..? If you answer me I promise you at least 10 "must see - must shot"

andybarton Posted March 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2007 You are based in the US, but buying a car in Germany? "The World ( Europe ) is your oyster" Gap, in the southern alpine region of France, is well worth a visit. Superb scenery and driving roads, especially when driving on the main road north. Mrs B and I will be there, one week after I buy my Porsche 911. Whenever that may be. And, don't forget to drive over the Millau bridge...
carcam Posted March 31, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted March 31, 2007 You are based in the US, but buying a car in Germany? "The World ( Europe ) is your oyster" Ah, but I've had many Porsches for many years but this is my first Leica (M8)! I'm more excited about photo ops than country roads (well- looking forward to both). Thanks for the input.

stunsworth Posted March 31, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you do go to the bridge at Millau don't forget to drive up the Tarn gorge. Fantastic scenery and an interesting road to drive on. The Mosel valley from Koblenz where it joins the Rhine up to and past Trier is also very scenic with quite a number of small towns to stop in. jlancasterd Posted March 31, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 31, 2007 The Graubunden in south-east Switzerland - especially the Albula and Bernina passes. Both best done by train (Rhaetian Railway).
gdb Posted March 31, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 31, 2007 Don't forget northern Italy! See Como and his lake, make a stop at the Villa d'Este where Franz Liszt wrote the Waterworks, see the restored "Last Meal" (Cenacolo Vinciano) in Sta Maria Delle Grazie Church in Milano, and why not drive to Venice? you could make a stop and see the arenae of Verona. There are so many other things to see. Try to drive to Orange (famous Antique Roman Theater) and Avignon (Palais des Papes), then go to Millau and to the Périgord and the Dordogne area (wonderful food...), and if you come up to Paris, don't miss the restaurant "La Vieille Maison" in Chartres, right at the foot of the Cathedral Just my two cents more... gfspencer Posted March 31, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 31, 2007 Where to start ???? If you are picking up a Porsche in Zuffenhausen you are already in a great place to take photographs! Start there and drive south into the Alps. There is a picture around every turn. Don’t miss the Dolomites. If you make it into France be sure to go to the Languedoc region and visit the walled city of Carcassonne. In Germany the Rhein River is beautiful but the Mosel River is better. The bottom line is that you can’t go wrong anywhere you go.
Sandokan Posted April 3, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 3, 2007 If it was winter, I would advise you to get some shots of the monkeys in the snow in the Vosges Mountains in Alsace. Every where mentioned so far is great, but what are your favourite scenes - street, architecture, people, mountains, lakes, rivers? Go where the heart takes you and you will find something worth while to photograph. For a holiday experience, Italy is fabulous as is Austria - both have good food and service is better in one country but people more friendly in the other (you decide). If you answer me I promise you at least 10 "must see - must shot" I agree here, anywhere in South Tirol or Trentino, especially Sarntal, Eggental anywhere near Lago Esmerelda. That whole area is one of the most beautiful places I`ve ever seen.
