rafikiphoto Posted March 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M Monochrom arrived today and it was quite an emotional moment. It's my first Leica which has been a dream. When I unpacked it I was thinking of the time, all those years ago, nearly 60 of them, when my father bought me my first camera - a cheap 120 roll-film jobbie from the local Boots Chemists shop in Wales. It did have a model name but that escapes me now. Together with flash bulbs and a fan flashgun I had so much fun! I think I was 10 years old then. I used that camera for years. As a youth I bought my first SLR - a Praktika, Russian I think, and a Pen-E along the way. Then, later on to a Canon AE-1 and then to a Minolta 7000. Jolly good camera. First AF I think. After my daughter left that on a train in Germany I bought a 9000 with the insurance proceeds but didn't like it and went for one of these digital jobs: the Canon 10D. Some of my best bird pics were taken with that camera with the 100-400L. Onward I went through the Canon 1D MkII then the 1D MkIII finally to a Fujifilm X-Pro-1 which I have now and love very much. Oh, and along the way I have had most of the Canon Powershot G series up to the G12 and the G1X, both of which I have now (unless my daughter left the G12 in New York last week!). I have always had a hankering for Leica. My wife and I both have Leica binoculars (although I do have a Swarovski spotting scope). Now, pushing 70 years of age I took the plunge. I decided on the M Monochrom because, for colour, I am very happy with the Fuji and to buy an M9 or M240 would be duplication. I wanted to experience a Leica before my dotage. With all the above I could have bought Leica three times over but I have enjoyed the journey and today at 13.53hrs I arrived! Wish me luck with my Monochrom. rafikiphoto Posted March 28, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted March 28, 2013 That's a touching story! Congratulations...but do you have a Leica lens? The MM wants one. Yes, a 50mm Summicrom is on the way but the dealer was slow in shipping it and being holidays in Spain today until Monday I probably won't see it until Tuesday. So I can admire it but can't take pictures yet.
jaapv Posted March 28, 2013 Share #7 Posted March 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Doesn't sound like dotage to me, more like a fulfillment. Enjoy! It is an amazing camera.
lenticularis Posted April 2, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 2, 2013 That's a really great story and wishing you much happiness in your enjoyment. The M seems to produce fabulous results and will be an excellent companion to your XPro1. A friend of mine has the XPro1 and loves it. Like you, I started my Canon SLR/DLSR journey with a 10D, after taking photos since my teens with my own father's cameras and then my own. My 86 year old father was given that 10D a few years ago and he's sadly probably now not mobile enough in a general sense to use it anymore. I now have a 5D Mk III, 2 L primes and a bunch of alternative MF and AF lenses. I also recently bought an M8 (from this forum in fact) and use it with a Contax Voigtlander 35/1.4 and also a Summicron 50. I think you will like the Summicron . I am probably likely to buy an M9 at some stage...
rafikiphoto Posted April 2, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted April 2, 2013 The lens arrived yesterday and, at last, I have had some fun getting used to the camera on a walk yesterday afternoon and out with the dogs this morning. I haven't yet looked at the protocol here for posting pictures but I'll try today.
SJP Posted April 2, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 2, 2013 I guess you know that you have probably bought the best combination available for B/W photography (OK the film guys now will kill me, I don't care see my signature ). Enjoy! That is is the primary concern & I am very happy about your enthusiasm.

hepcat Posted April 2, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 2, 2013 Congrats on the MM! You'll soon wonder why you didn't indulge yourself years and years ago with a Leica. Great story.
rafikiphoto Posted April 2, 2013 Author Share #14 Posted April 2, 2013 Congrats on the MM! You'll soon wonder why you didn't indulge yourself years and years ago with a Leica. Great story. I've only had it complete with lens for just over a day and I'm already beginning to wonder that.
