Very interesting news from Nik and Google today

That was just a coincidence I think. I also used that form, and what comes back is a generic "We've received your enquiry" type of mail, promising to be in touch over the next couple days.

Following some of the links through to the DPR comments and then the Google+ postings by various Google employees in answer to hundreds of questions, shows that the whole thing is pretty chaotic - seems like quite a few European customers never received the 'transfer-my-Nik-registration-to-Google' mail which is apparently a prerequisite for the offer (I never got that mail)

I have never received any other email from Nik Software other than the free upgrade email so I'm not sure about the transfer registration being any kind of prerequisite. What has changed this week is that it seems you can no longer access the old Nik website. When I was investigating the offer (whenever it was Andy started this thread) I went to the 'my account' section of the Nik website and rooted around for information about the upgrade. It now seems that Google have removed the old website. Some of the information in the new Google/Nik help pages also seems to have been added since I looked earlier in the week. There is now something about updating your email address:

"Updating email address

How do I change my email address in order to receive the Nik Collection download link again?

Please send an email to our support team with both your old and new email addresses included. We will update your information and send the download link again to your current address."

I'm pretty sure that when things calm down and you can get someone's attention they'll be able to check your serial number(s) and send you the download link.

+1 : Feeling very lucky, and very grateful to Steve Unsworth, who I recall posted the link here whence I got my freebie SFX1

Thanks, I'm trying to remember if I downloaded it myself - I guess I'll know if I receive/don't receive and email over the next few days <grin>.

In response to my emailed inquiry as to if my possession of a Siver Efex license via purchase of a Leica M Monoochrome now entitled me to have free acces to the full Nik bundle , here is the reply of Google:

"Dear Frank ,Thank you for contacting Nik by Google. I went through your account and found that your software was bought form a third party retailer. Unfortunately you do not qualify for our free upgrade."

Then why have other purchasers of Leica cameras qualified for that upgrade? What recourse would someone suggest?

I own the entire Nik suite, so the upgrade isn't really applicable to me. I bought the suite from Nik independent of my Leica--I was using it before I bought the M9. Others may have also purchased the software independent of their Lecia purchase.

Still no email from them, so I have sent them one, asking what the problem is.

It's not even possible to log in to the Account section of the Nik site any more to check your own email preferences.

Interestingly, I have received dozens of offers from them, via email, over the years, so I suspect that I did not check the "no contact" option on the registration page.

Andy, here is what Google wrote me:

The Customer Support request form seems to be working today, I actually got a message saying 'thank you'. I wonder if they have just been in meltdown answering questions over the last few days.

I don't have a free copy of anything. I have a bought copy of Viveza that I paid for.

If you are unhappy, respond to them saying that you know other people have had the suite upgrade. Refer them to this thread.

Well that was a quick reply from Google Support, about 15 minutes (after the Cust Reply Form worked). I've downloaded the full Nik Suite and it all works!

To reiterate, I was getting update emails from Nik, but I didn't authorize Nik to pass on my email address to Google (that I can remember). I pasted a product key from a previous purchase onto the Customer Support/Reply Form. OK, well done Google, they do have a will to get it all sorted out.:)

I have now completed the Service Form on the Nik site, so let's see what happens there.

Not even an auto-responder from their email address, this morning, which is very poor.

Did you go via a Google site, Steve, or the Nik one?

Edit: I did get an auto-responder from the web page form.

"Dear Andy Barton,

Thank you for contacting Nik by Google. We have received your question and due to new software releases, our response time is currently 1-2 business days. Our office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm PST."

This concurs with what Carl Bretteville received from them. He hasn't had any emails from them about the upgrade either.

Less than five minutes, they are down to now :)

Thanks for the help, guys.

Dear Andy,

Thank you for contacting Nik by Google.

Here is the download link for the new Nik Collection by Google.

Mac: link removed...

Your download will begin automatically. When the download is complete, locate the file on your computer, double-click on the installer and follow the onscreen instructions. There's no need to uninstall previous versions first.

The whole thing is very strange, disorganized and arbitrary. I used the form a couple days ago, received the auto-reply and during the night got an answer asking for my serials (which I'd already sent). Sent the serials again this morning together with date of purchase but haven't had any reply and didn't really expect one, as it should be the middle of the night where their support is now located, going towards a public holiday.

As for the 'well done Google' thing: what annoys me the most about this is the absolute certainty that Google won't be developing these plug-ins past the short-to-medium term. Google are absolutely not in the business of making plug-ins or enhancements for third-party platforms - it's totally outside their business model.

The medium-long term fate of this technology is that it'll be rolled into some sort of integrated Chrome OS cloud-based image manipulation app, which will only run on ChromeOS-compatible hardware.

The whole low-price/no-price giveaway is intended to swamp the owners who've paid comparatively large sums for the software, and who would be vocally malcontent when the product is dumped. The way that Google have positioned it now, there's a legion of owners who will consider themselves lucky to have had so many good products at a low (or no) price, and they'll vastly outnumber the minority of protesters in six months/one year when the kill announcement is made.

My aim is to get the maximum out of them as possible, having paid much more for my 2 products than all of them now cost put together.

PS: just saw Andy's post above while I was typing, which makes my lack of response from Google even harder to understand? Like I said: arbitrary. Thought I'd try the form Andy used once again to see if I got the lucky 5-minute response. Naturally, nothing back. Nothing like consistent customer service to inspire confidence. ;)

They wanted the mobile Snapseed team. They just announced that the desktop version of Snapseed is being discontinued.."

google also want to get the touch point patent that nik software has, it will be integrated to the Android, picassa and google plus.

The interesting point are:

google took off the DRM security out of Nik Software, which means once it goes to torrent, it will ease people copying around. And that's bad for competitors, who are struggling in trying to catch up with lower pricing scheme. how can one survive selling cheap product with such quality for a niche market.

Well easy, if Google someday see it as non profitable, just kill it. Be evil.

I have only just registered my SEP 2 as I have just bought my Monochrom. I filled in the customer support form on the NIK site and very quickly received an acknowledgement saying they are snowed under but to expect a reply in 1-2 business days. So we'll wait and see.

Wowee!!!

Thank you all for the heads up. My email arrived 3/25 and I sent it directly to "delete" file without reading it (I must have thought it was an ad.) At any rate, I have safely moved it back to "Inbox" for future download.

My only history with Nik is about a year old with Silver Efex Pro 2 and I am certainly grateful for being a "long time customer." Looking forward to sharpening module and Viveca.

Thanks again!!!
