MATE current ebay price is still very high. It'sin the range of $5000~$6000. It's a good time to sell it. I suspect the price will go down very quick.

With $5000~$6000, you are not very far from the new M (240). You can use Leica R 35-70mm on M. If you are willing to trade the 28mm with 70mm, I think the 35-70mm has much better image quality. I've seen recently an R 35-70mm f4 in the range of $700~900.

MATE E49 is more flare proof than E55, but I think you still need to add the hood. Once added the hood, the difference between E49 and E55 is not that much. My experience is none.

Only you can answer the question: do you need 35 and 50 focal lengths? is f/4 enough for your needs? how much do you value convenience?

I find the MATE a great companion for travel to sunny places - although it is somewhat flare-prone at 50mm.

By all means, stick to #2 of your pro-reasonings. The MATE can do what

all the other lenses can´t do:

This versatile lens could be the only one you need, at least when travelling.

NO need to change lenses and - in case you work digital - allow the tropical climate

to reach your sensor.

I have both, the MATE is rare and getting rarer. The 28 summicron ASPH is somewhere in the top of the Leica pile. The MATE works best for me at 50mm but it is blown away by the 50/1.4 summilux so I am in an eternal state of despair & misery:o

The MATE at 28 mm suffers from some slight distortion & so I prefer not to use it at that focal length. Having said it has a unique look, it paints a picture that few other lenses can.

Should I keep my MATE or sell it? If I would sell then there is no chance to get another one I fear.

I see no reason why you would want to keep the older E55 MATE now that you have the E49. Particularly as it would easily fund the extraordinary 28mm Summicron ASPH probably with a reasonable amount of cash left over.

My two favourite focal lengths are 28 and 50mm. I recently bought an E49 28-35-50 MATE. It is an incredibly versatile and useful lens, and I really like the character of photographs taken with it. There is indeed some distortion at 28mm as Stephen mentioned and the IQ still doesn't compare with the 50 Summilux ASPH (or 28 Summicron ASPH for that matter).

Within the 28 to 50mm focal lengths I also have the 2.0/28 Summicron ASPH, 1.4/35 Summilux ASPH, and 1.4/50 Summilux ASPH (and some other 50s). The MATE is fantastic, the 28 and 50 are extraordinary. These are the last lenses I would ever part with.

Do yourself a favour, sell the E55 MATE and buy the 28 Summicron.

As someone suggested, you could buy an M240 with an R 4.0/35-70 but why the R Zoom when you have the E49 MATE and you clearly like the 28mm FL

Mark, I see no reason to keep the older MATE. Look after your V2; sell V1 and use the funds either to buy your desired 28 Summicron (I use my 28 Elmarit ASPH in preference to TE28); or add a medium telephoto lens such as the most suitable current 90mm for you. The big advantage of adding a second lens is give you one lens with an extra two f/stops for when that is needed. I came near to selling my MATE V2; I am glad I did not because I find the TE35 and TE50 superb for much of my walkabout work and when travelling.

It's interesting to put the MATE on the new M and watch the difference as you change focal lengths and what relatively little effect a zoom "ratio" of less than 2 makes. It's an intriguing lens, I have both versions but with the value locked up in one, I think a 28mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux is more attractive.

yea,yea,yea

Get your own :D

Mmm :D

OK so sometimes this community is fun, anyway I am still stuck on what to do. Sell the MATE that I hardly use, keep the MATE that I can probably never regain?

Leica stuffs are good for use and collect.

From the collector's point of view, yes, you should keep at least the v2, regardless whether you'll use it or not. I'd even keep the v1. It's Leica, it's collections man!

From the use point of view, I'd see which one can bring in more money. Keep in mind that a naked V2 is much more flare proof than a naked V1, while once with the hood there is no difference (my experience), since you have both, you can easily check if this is true.

Since I've owned both and sold both, I can share my thought. I sold both to fund my other toys, not photography related though. But if I were to make decision today, I'd sell both. I should get back $10~$11K. I can get a M ($7k) and a 35-70mm f4 ($1k), and a 70-180mm f2.8 ($7k). Well, the extra $4~5k will have to come from my allowance.

IF the OPs a collector then he should keep both, otherwise sell v1 and buy the 28 Summicron or whatever. I don't understand why this is such a difficult decision

You sounded a very simple minded person.

C'mon, this is very personal, how could it be simple?
