Nice ones! It has such amazingly smooth bokeh. Very pretty. The backlit photo shows how well the lens handles high-contrast areas. If you think of it, the lens's specs are pretty amazing. 90/2.4 and 70/2.2 are not bad apertures at all.

The photos being posted here are so consistently excellent - who needs more than 5Mp when you have a D2? Great work, everyone.

Here is a shot from a walk today at the Barnes Wetland Centre in S London, a reserve for birds. This is a bird-watcher in a hide.

Best to everyone on the D2 thread.

Hello to everyone!

Somehow, 2 weeks ago I decided to sell my 5dmkII and starting looking for Leica's, and somehow my heart reached for the Digilux 2 - all within a couple weeks. I have been shooting Canon since a little boy with an AE-1, and one day out of the blue, inexplicably, I'm lusting after this Digilux 2 - not that it doesn't deserve the attention, but I'm just finding it curious how I've happened upon it and this thread. I've never in my life even held a Leica! I know I will own one soon :), but can't wait to. My eyes have been glued to "that auction site" lately ;)

Anyway, I hope to join you all soon!

Coming from a 5D you might find some features mighty oldfashioned with the D2.

Hope you do not end up frustrated. You have to take your time with this camera.

It´s from 2004, designed a year or two before, and can be SLOW, VERY SLOW,

but also rewarding.

10 digital years are like centuries ... The good thing is, LEICA still works on it,

if something happens to the wonderful beast.

Best regards

GEORG

Thank you for the warning - I "downgraded" to the 5d mkI, bought a wind-up mechanical watch - heh, I think the digilux 2 is the next logical step :p. Maybe it's nostalgia.. I'm sure it'll have it's frustrating points, but it's at least well invited. Nonetheless, can't wait! Anyone looking to sell? ;)

Welcome David!

Sorry, I'm not selling mine :) But keep looking; they do pop up! There's one at Leicashop in Vienna at the moment. Though buying from a dealer may cost as much, or a bit more than what you'd pay on Ebay you do get a warranty which may be really useful for an older digital camera like the D2. Also, look for one that's had the sensor replaced. Leica does currently/still offer sensor replacement for free but who knows how long they will.

I also came from a 5D2 background (most recently) and don't find the D2 handling, even when shooting RAW, annoying. I've kept my Canon equipment though because I find different tools work for different things. I know that I'll always be as interested in Canon as I am interested in Leica.

cheers

Philip

Thank you Philip!

I figure not many on this thread are thinking of letting theirs go :p. I love the old classic 5d IQ. Technologically behind, but it's definitely got its own character, distinct from the 5d2. Such personality is exactly what I'm looking to discover in the Digilux.

David,

Welcome to the forum! As you look around you'll find there's a massive amount of excellent information here for free so I hope it's becomes of use to you.

Since you've recently acquired a mechanical wind-up watch it seems to me that you may be on a path that leads you to the Leica M rangefinder range of cameras and lenses and the D2 is an ideal stepping stone along the way.

I have a 5DII too and there's a potential overlap with what I use it for with the D2 but the D2 always convinces me to take it out in place of the 5DII unless I particularly need to use a Leica R lens.

Good luck with finding your D2 and don't forget to check the Buy & Sell boards here (tab at the top of the page) because they do turn up there from tine to time.

I don't know if you're aware but the D2's sister camera is the Panasonic DMC-LC1, which is often available more readily and for less than the D2. There are a few differences - it's all black and has an angled top deck but the rest is the same and most importantly it sports the same 28-90/2.0-2.4 Vario-Summicron Leica lens. Some say they can see a difference in the output but I'll leave you to decide that (there is a thread or two on that here).

Pete.

Is this a composite shot by any chance? I only ask because the moon looks wrong. From the shadows on the wood in the foreground the sun is shining from the left of the picture but the shadow on the moon shows the sun shining on it from the right. Also the moon looks bigger than it normally is. I could be mistaken but shouldn't there be shadows on the geese from the low sun to the left?:o

Yesterday I was in a very nice place in Lithuania, there was a fest named "Tulip fest". Since I had nex3 & summicron R 50/2 and D2, gave D2 to my girlfriend. D2 is so intuitive and simple to use, that my gf had no problem using it after her small all-in-one modern compact. 3 pictures from D2, last one - my lady with D2, taken with nex&summicron :)
