D2. Cropped. Fading Hibuscus

I had tried taking this with my M8 and 50 Summicrion but I just couldn't get it right. The D2 though with its close-up auto focus got what I wanted. I am surprised at the quality of the colour and detail.

I'm debating between the Digilux 2, V-Lux 1, and X1.

V-1s go for $450.

D-2s go for $800.

X1s go for $2,000.

I really don't want the X1... but since the D-2 is $800, my logic is I can spend 2.5x more and get a vastly superior and newer camera.

I really want the D-2 but am having a hard time justifying the $800 used cost, vs new cost of other cameras.

V-1 seems more reasonable... but is it as good as the D-2? (I know one is DSLR-style and one is RF-style in bodies)

How does the image quality, "magic" quality, etc. compare between the V-1 and D-2?

How does the image quality, "magic" quality, etc. compare between the V-1 and D-2?

The sensor of the V-Lux 1 has 10 MP, and the sensor of the Digilux 2 has 5 MP. However, the V-1 sensor is even smaller than the D2 sensor! So, do not expect too many sharpness or details with the V-1, as the noise is strong, and so is the "noise reduction" in the V-1.

The X1 is not a camera for me, nevertheless, the image quality is really very high, and you cannot simply compare an APS sensor with the tiny little sensors that are built in the D2 or V-1.

Krabat,

Heretic I might be but the things i like about the D2 are;

image quality

F2 Summicron

Zoom

Autofocus

Macro (at least fairly close focus).

The things I don't like about it are;

Only 5Mp but it still does remarkably well.

V. slow on Raw

Too much noise in situations of low light/high ISO

Somewhat bulky.

In short it is a very useful, flexible camera to carry about and you can get excellent results.

Having said that in your case I would think about the X1. I'd prefer it with a viewfinder and I find this to be a real drawback. The fixed lens doesn't bother me at all. Very often I go around with just one lens for my M8. In fact it takes away part of the thinking and lets you concentrate on the picture. the X1 reputedly has image quality second to none. It is smallish and relatively easy to pack away.

Though I really like the handling, OoC jpeg performance and the zoom of the digilux-2, it's only good at iso100 and without much cropping. The X1 absolutely outperforms the DL2 on every front though. The image quality is just brilliant and the large sensor leaves plenty of room for crops to get those fixed focus shots just that little tighter in the frame. It's best to have both really... :) good luck.

I just got hold of one through an auction site. Lovely little walkaround camera, unbelievably quiet and nice to be able to shoot at 1/30 and below.

Depends what you want really. 12x9 prints from X1 do not put the DL2 to shame in any way.

I believe the DL2 is more of a 'photographer's' camera, for those who use a more considered approach to framing rather than one who uses the machine gun shots/crop later approach. It encourages more discipline. The fast zoom lens (pretty darned sharp wide open) often renders the X1's advantage of higher MP and ISO irrelevent to those who don't make huge prints.

It's best to have both really...

Ownership of the DL2 is the reason why I don't want an X1. I'll be using the DL2 for as long as it stays alive, or at least until the release of the X3 ;)

The digilux-2 only performs well at iso100... and gets pretty noisy at higher iso rates. The Leica X1 beats the DL2 in that department every time with flawless pictures up to iso1600. That's where it outperforms the DL2 for sure.

Not sure where this idea that cropping is the "non-photographer's way of shooting" comes from... we've always done it in the darkroom too and I've seen many Magnum photogs do it as well.

Please let's not turn this magnificent 1000+ post thread into a "Digilux 2 v Whatever" camera arguement. If you want to do that then please start a new thread and go at it all you want.:o

In this thread please try to stick to photos that show the Digilux 2's distinctive look.:)

Thanks,

Pete.

I wouldn't say the X1 is "vastly superior" to the Digilux 2

Zoom over no-zoom

f2.0 over f/2.8

Just to name a few advantages of the Digilux 2 that comes to mind.

Owning both I can say all's true for iso 100... but after that iso100 the X1 beats the digilux2 on the noise front. The X1 is an amazing low-light camera really.
