Hi everybody!

For those interested - the Olympus viewfinder is definitely not working on the M. The shoe is about two, three milimeters too long, so the electronics don't get contact. Maybe somebody's trying to cut of a bit of the shoe ...

The camera is just great!

Nik

Melt the shoe and toast the outside till it turns black. Oly VF-2 works fine, as others have stated you got the wrong model EVF perhaps.

VF-2 works like a charm and looks great on the camera.

Stephen, how did you remove the logo?

Aah, that's easy. All you need is Photoshop and a few minutes :D

VF-2 [...] looks great on the camera.

Ugh. I was contemplating the silver VF-2 for my chrome M (ordered long ago, not yet delivered). But looking at your picture, I think I'll better get the black one. The silver one obviously has a yellowish (titanium? egg-shell? champagne?) hue which totally does not go with the plain, cool-colour chrome of the camera. Thanks for showing!

Please can anyone tell me, does the VF2 (and therefore presumably the EVF2) have its own built-in dioptre correction? (For example, does the eyepiece twiddle round like on binoculars?)

Yes it has a diopter adjustment.

To each his own. In China it costs about $1 to get the unit repainted and the Olympus logo gone forever. I am also having a local shoe cobbler re-cut and modify my Leicatime half case, as it's so nicely broken in I would hate to part with it.

Does anyone have a clue when the next version of this viewfinder will come out? I know they announced the screen a couple of months ago that will likely go into it, so I would expect to see it pretty soon. I would hate to buy a VF-2 for the M-240, only to have a better version released in a few weeks or months. Of course this assumes the next version will have the same contacts and all, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be compatible.

Dirk, I don't have any information on a new version of this viewfinder, but I can tell you that I have been pleased beyond my expectations with the VF-2. While it's not quite as good as the Sony RX-1 it isn't far behind, and the image quality matches nicely with the M240's built in LCD.

Assuming mine is typical, the issue is that black is not really black, the contrast is not as good as the LCD. Stephen, how are you getting on with image review through the EVF? I think it sucks and would prefer it to appear on the LCD without all the button pushing to switch between the two.

I'll be interested to see the repainted EVF and whether they've been able to do it without gumming up the hinge pivots, or are they taking it apart?

If there are new EVFs coming down the track, we'd better hope this interface is here to stay.

Now Stephen, that's just evil.. I'm still waiting for my M and the 50 I have "in stock" for it is the 50 lux pre-asph.. and now you "march" in here displaying the M with a nocti! You're evil! ;-)

Seriously though, looks absoluty fantastic. Bet it works the same as well, especially in your hands..

There is a small gap between the M and the Olympus VF-2, which maybe is what the dealer that spoke to the OP was referring to - see photo below but like others, I agree it all works on the M.

However, I find that the focus peaking is really quite difficult to spot on the VF-2, when not zoomed, whereas it works fine on the rear LCD. It might be difficult to achieve but I think different levels of focus peaking, selectable in the menu, would be a significant improvement.

I know Jono says he is managing OK with the 28-90 Vario Elmarit but I am not sure how good I would be at focusing a mid range zoom on the EVF. It is not practical to keep zooming to focus. I want to be comfortable with this before I embark on getting a 28/90 framelines coded Contax to M adapter made by SRB and buying a 28-85 Zeiss Vario Sonnar lens.

I agree, EVF review is ok for checking focus but little else. Bears little resemblance to the actual image and the review on the LCD.

A Menu option for Review in EVF or LCD would be nice...... but I suspect the only current setting is EVF on or off..... so if it defaults to LCD for review after a shutter press you will end up having to switch the EVF on again for the next image.....:o

It works fine with my Telyt 400/5 ...... although you do need some crisp boundaries to show up the peaking easily ........ x5 is probably the best setting..... something always shows up on this .... un-magnified and x10 seems more hit and miss..... but I'm talking about the average UK morning (grey, dull and pi**ing down).....

To be honest on x10 the image is so good that peaking is not really needed.

It is unzoomed focussing I think I would find difficult. Zoomed either x5 or x10 is fine for longer lenses (Telyts 280/400/560) and in fact is I think much more accurate than using a Visoflex and 5X chimney viewer. However, I think using zoom is not practical for quick use with a mid range zoom. I may just save money and keep using my MATE with range finding.
