Non Leica slr lenses on the new M

Does anyone know if there are likely to be adapters for any third party slr manual (non AF) lenses to work on the Leica M?

I'm personally interested in Contax ZeissSLR mount lenses and, to a lesser extent Olympus SLR lenses. When I used the 5D Mk 2 I got some of these, along with some Leica R lenses, and adapters to work on my 5D. I realy liked some of the Contax lenses and would love to be able to use one or 2 on the M.

Thanks

Nick

You could try here: Adriano Lolli. I got the Olympus to M adapter and it works great. Very quick turnaround too.

These look very nice. I've got fotodiox for Canon FD and Nikon (both machined by Malcolm Taylor to bring up the 35/90 framelines + with the 6 bit code pits). They work very well.

Novoflex has many adapters to mount SLR lenses to the Leica M bayonet mount, including those for Canon FD, Contax/Yashica, Leica R, M42, Minolta SR, Minolta A/Sony Alpha, Nikon F, Olympus OM, Pentax K, and several others.

You want the Novoflex LEM/CONT adapter and possibly also the Novoflex LEM/OM adapter.

I tried several Minolta Rokkor lenses for SR mount on the new Leica M (Typ 240) via the Novoflex LEM/MIN adapter, and all of them are working just wonderfully—including retrofocus super-wides, fish-eyes, and telephoto lenses. The only SLR lens I found so far that does not work well on the M was an old non-retrofocus (near-symmetrical) 21 mm lens from the '60s with an extremely short back-focus distance, supposed to be used on an SLR camera with locked-up mirror ... the W.Rokkor-PI 21 mm 1:4.5. But everything else is working just fine.

Adriano Lolli's adapters are regarding prices between the chinese brands (cheapest) and Novoflex. Metabones adapters are very good as well, and perhaps not as expensive as Novoflex.

It does make a lot of sense buying the better, and therefore more precise, brands.

No movements should be allowed when the lens is attached to the adapter.

I am not against any brand, only against the badly build units... ;)

I have Lolli's OM > M and Nikon > M adapters. They are very nice, heavy and solid. There is only one small aspect that I had to correct: for avoiding reflections I had to paint matte black some inner chrome surfaces.

Novoflex has a new Nikon > M adapter wich features the possibility of closing the diaphragm.

I've just been playing with the Nikon 14mm f2.8 lens on the M via a Novoflex adapter. Seems to work quite well.

There's Leica R lenses of course and even old M42 screw-thread lenses - I have a handful of old Carl Zeiss Jena lenses to play with.

Look on the Novoflex web-site and the range of adapters is boggling.

产品展示-相机接环 > 理光M机身-KIPON接环

I have used the Kipon brand quite a bit when I was stationed in Shanghai. They probably make the highest quality product outside of those from Germany or Japan and usually run between US$40-70. They also make very complicated adaptors such as the tilt-shift for the Fuji X to mount Nikon lenses.

Olaf,

I assume current Novoflex adapters bring 50/75mm framelines. Did you adapt yours for 28/90 or used as is. Any issues with lens selection in the menu.

What menu? The camera knows nothing about what lenses you might be mounting on the camera - Nikon, Contax, Minolta - so will only display the list of M lenses or, if the R to M adapter is mounted, the list of "supported" R lenses.

That's right—at least mine does.

However I purchased my adapter three years ago. Now—after we know Leica's own R-Adapter M will bring up the 28/90 framelines—maybe Novoflex, as well as other adapter manufacturers, possibly will switch to 28/90 framelines sooner or later, too.

Used as is. And no lens profiles manually selected. Of course, it's always possible to select a lens from the menu (with an uncoded adapter, M lenses only) but as this doesn't make any sense with SLR lenses, I left the menu alone and used the lenses "uncoded".

In order to be able to choose from the R lens menu, your adapter must be coded (6-bit code 110111 = 55) and it must bring up the 28/90 framelines.

Dumb question but how are Nikon G lenses, for example, used with adapters? Is that even possible when they don't have aperture dials anymore? Are they fixed wide open?

Not dumb at all; there is a lever on the adapter that allows continuous manual aperture control - no click stops.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies

Think I shall try the Novoflex option

Nick

I have a Novoflex and it is expensive but well made. It allows adjustment of Nikon G lenses which do not have aperture ring, though with no click stops. I have tried it at infinity on M9 and it works very well. I am getting it milled for 6 bit by John Milich so I can select a close® Leica R lens in the M menus. No final verdict until I have an M to mount it on but I am optimistic about it.

Interesting! Does the 6-bit code correspond to just that it is an R lens and for each lens you connect to the adapter you select it in the menu? If I ever get an M someday it would be interesting to use my Nikon 200mm F/2 there. Best lens ever!

I want to re-purchase a Contax 28-85 Vario Sonnar lens, which I know is good. However I cannot find a Contax to M adapter that brings up the 28/90 framelines, so I can access the R menu if I code the adapter as 110111 (55-3). I have spoken to a number of makers but they just don't seem to "get it", that by a minor change in the CNC file, they stand to clean up on the market. The lack of commercial nous surprises me. There are other great Contax lenses that we might consider, the 35-135 and 100-300 Vario Sonnars.

I think I am right in saying that the M240 R to M adapter is not yet in the shops.

Incidentally, I was considering to get one of the Novoflex LEM / NIK NT adapters. I have a complete series of Nikon G lenses and I am planning to use them with my future M. There is a new version on Novoflex website but they don't come cheap though.
