Thanks Steve. I saw his retrospective at the Manchester Art Gallery last year.

 

Some great images. Particularly like the one of the miner in the police helmet and also the terraced street shots.

 

Time for his family and friends to celebrate his life and work.

Don and Bob Smithies (late of this forum and also, sadly, no longer with us) were two of the reasons why I stuck with photography in the 70s. Bob and I had an long discussion around the time of Don's retro-exhibition last year, sounded like they shared some great (and maybe not so great) times at The Gruniad. They will both be sadly missed.

 

Now there is only one of the triumvirate left.

He was a very accomplished and skilful photographer. Just a pity he worked for such a poor newspaper. I used to keep some of his pictures for ideas.
