msteber Posted February 16, 2013 Share #21  Posted February 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Found a leftover Elmarit 24mm on the internet. Technically it's new and still has the Leica passport warranty card. What's a good price for this lens? The asking price is $3k. But offers would be considered. Thoughts?  Aloha Rosie  The Elmarit 24 is one of my favorite lenses. It isn't the lowest distortion, do you really care? It just has a special something, a special look, a special draw. I can pick them out at a glance. I got mine a couple of years ago for 2.5k. I don't know what they are going for now. Look at KEH, very good people and totally reputable.  It is a fabulous lens. Good luck!  Mark

thighslapper Posted February 16, 2013 Share #27 Â Posted February 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a 24/2.8 which I hardly use and tried to sell on this forum at a very reasonable price but there were no takers. Â I MUCH prefer the 21/3.4 which produces stunning images and the FOV seems perfect to me. I never found a use for a focal length between 21 and 28 (or 35 for that matter). Â I would go for the 21 if I were you, you will not miss 24 from my experience...
lct Posted February 16, 2013 Share #28  Posted February 16, 2013 There have been two designs of the 21/3.4 asph (# 11145) AFAIK. The first one (left) caused focussing problems so it has been replaced by the current one (right) in 2011 IIRC. Both are optically identical and i've never heard of a third model in 2012 or 2013. LucisPictor Posted February 16, 2013 Share #32 Â Posted February 16, 2013 A nice 24mm would be nice - mainly to replace my 28mm lens on my M8. I have got a 28mm and a 35mm lens. On an M8 that does not make much sense, really. And the 24mm frame is shown in the viewfinder. 15 - 24 - 35 - 75 reads better than 15 - 28 - 35 - 75. (My 50 is an older one with that vintage flair.) Â Anyway, those 24mm lenses are often pretty expensive. That's why I will be satisfied with my set for a little longer, I guess.

Matter of tastes i guess, i use 24, 28 & 35 on my M8.2 the same way as 28, 35 & 50 on FF cams. YMMV.

peter_n Posted February 16, 2013 Share #36 Â Posted February 16, 2013 We're all different. I sold my 21/2.8 and bought the 24/2.8 Elmarit in 2006, then bought another one two years later because I love the focal length so much. To me so much more usable than the 21. The Elmarit is just a beautiful lens and I think the best Leica 24 (I've tried them all).

xalo Posted February 16, 2013 Share #38 Â Posted February 16, 2013 It's all in what we put behind "best"... The 24mm f2,8 is a great all-rounder, for film anyway, and was incredible on my RD-1. Another one I'm missing. The Elmar has less finder intrusion (on M8 - that I tried in a shop; and for framing wo/external finder), less speed (perhaps more important for film) and allegedly higher contrast. Not what everyone wants. The Summilux -- well it basically buys both the aforementioned, also weighs about as much () and is quite bulky... very special purpose lens, it seems to me. pgk Posted February 16, 2013 Share #39 Â Posted February 16, 2013 I used to own the 24mm Elmarit and now have the 21mm SE. My totally unscientific, purely impression based feeling is that the 24mm Elmarit is a superb lens, but I think that the SE is even better. Its a fabulous lens.
