Hello guys. I am going to need to pick up a 24mm lens to shoot architecture and interior photos with my M9. I would also use it on my M6. I've been looking into the following:

- Elmar 24mm 3.8 - new

- Elmarit 24mm 2.8 - used

- Super-Elmar 21mm 3.4 - new (as an alternative to the 24mm idea)

Any guidance you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

it really depends on what you are looking for. all of them are great in its own right. If you want perfect image quality (note: this is not equivalent to quality image), the newer one is perfect in all aspect, but with less distinct character. The 2.8 is of course faster, do you need it? The 24 is also nice in one more aspect in that you don't really 'NEED' an external finder. the whole rangefinder window is approximately 24mm, so you can generally guesstimate the framing.

i myself was in your situation a few months back, and i chose the 21 Super-Elmar-M ASPH.

Super-Elmar 21mm 3.4 - new (as an alternative to the 24mm idea)

Fabulous lens, excellent for architecture but needs leveling very carefully and a viewfinder (I use the WATE version which is, from those I have tried, the best. Used it was less than a new 21mm viewfinder, but you might have to wait to find one.

Depends what you want to shoot. I can recommend the 3,8/24 without resevation, it's a small, light and very sharp lens. I also have a 2,8/21 Asph which is plenty good enough for everything I need it for, but the 24 gets more use as 21 is too wide for most of what I like to shoot. The 3,8/24 is also fast enough for me. Your mileage may vary.

I would go for the 21 Super-Elmar. For Leica relatively 'cheap' and for interior it must not be the fastest lens... And better to crop a bit that miss part of the picture ;) I'm using it without viewfinder - but most of the time with a tripot to correct the frame easily (at night I do test shoots at 3200 ISO to have a fast preview and them switch to a lower ISO).

Apparently,Leica announced a new 21 today so presumably that should be considered

Now use 18 and 24 2.8 Elmarit. Can say the 24 is extremely sharp and when used no evidence of wide angles. It's a remarkable lens that's little faster which can be helpful indoors.

I got the email too.

I don't see any evidence that its a a new lens. They just say "Well now we would like to tell you more about the biggest little lens in our family of super-wide-angle lenses for the M-System. "

Just an advert. For what is a very tempting lens!

For a nearly 4.0 I find the Elmar 24 quite expensive, where the Elmarit 24 already was astounding for his age and still competitive now for its price. It is a bit bigger but the Elmar 24 is not at all compact.

A 21 is a much different angle and a completely different decision. Why not include the Elmarit 21 in the comparison if you go that far, a bit illogical.

3000 US dollars is a normal price especially when it is in mint condition

The 24mm Elmari-M ASPH was a landmark lens, I really like the blend of incredible sharpness and the 'look' of the lens which seems to show more depth than the few shots I took with the SEM.

If you review the MTF's you'll see it is only marginally behind the SEM at f5.6 and on par with the 24 Summilux.

I think it's a very good buy second hand at the moment, it was a stunner and sold for £3k until recently.

Without a doubt, this website is the best around. Thank you so much to all that responded with advice. Keep the comments coming. I have not pulled the trigger so far.

For those of you suggesting the Zeiss, I hear you. I have the 50mm Planar, and I really like it. It's a lot lighter than the Leica offerings and I love the unique look of the shots, sharp and creamy at the same time. I know that sounds strange, but it's true.

Just not sure if the 25mm would be the right focal length for my purposes - not much different from the 24mm, I know, but would rather go a little wider rather than in the other direction.
